Hi guys. I know an external monitor on my XPS 15 is not big deal. Works all the time. What I am wondering though, is since my screen is not the FULL-HD one ( I know! Stupid, stupid me! ), can I run my laptop display at one resolution (1366 x 768 I think?) and then run my external display at full 1080p at the same time? I have not gotten it to work. If it is possible I would love to hear about it. Thank you guys.

Only if you extend the desktop can you have different resolutions. (I don't think there is a program that can clone different resolutions...)

Dear HunkieMunkie, My Name is Sylvester P. I am from Dell Social Media and Community Team.

I see that you have a query on connecting your system to an external monitor which has 1080p resolution.

We can connect the system to an external monitor which as 1080p resolution and your system will be able to support it as your system goes with an HDMI port.

All you have to do is to connect the external monitor, go to the main desktop screen.
Right click on the main desktop screen and select the option which says Screen Resolution.
Once you get the screen resolution page, kindly click on the respective external monitor which is usually, Display 2 and then change the resolution and I am sure you should be able to view it in the resolution which you desired.

If you have any further questions, kindly feel free to revert back and we will be happy to help you.

Thank you both. I will try that again, but I seem to remember it not allowing me to run two separate resolutions at the same time. I could run my external at a higher resolution only if I turned off my laptop screen. But I'll give it a shot anyway. I'm prone to user error.

If this happens, you may need to make the change in the Nvidia Control Panel. At first, I was unable to set different monitor resolutions on an external monitor (I have 1080pFHD, external was 1440x900) using the Windows Screen Resolution settings. However when I used the Nvidia Control Panel for the first time, I was able to use the Windows Screen Resolution settings for every subsequent resolution change after that.

I don't know why this worked for me, but I it did. Just thought you might want to know in case you have trouble with it too.

yes, it is posible, I connected my l502x to 1080p screens using hdmi and a minidisplay port to vga adaptor.

I am currently running on a external screen (1440x900) wich still better than my laptop internal display (1366x768)

however I am using just the external screen right now, I disabled the internal one since I use it now like a desktop (external screen plus a usb keyboard/mouse)

anyway I supose you can use both by using extended desktop or by cloning the image (cloning the image will require the same resolution)
