I just purchased a new monitor and I've been using it as a second monitor using a DVI cable.

    1) If I were to purchase an HDMI cable though, would I still be able to use it as a second monitor as well or would it only be copy of what was on my laptop's screen?

    2) If I can't use the HDMI to act as a dual monitor, can I use DVI to supply the video but also use the HDMI to output audio through the monitor since that is where my speakers are hooked through?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

VGA > DVI cable or adapter

Yes you will still be able to use it as a dual monitor.
