    Hey all,

I have a question regarding the XPS 15.

With the NVIDIA 435M/420M graphic card, would it support gaming of latest games (COD, NFS: Hot Pursuit) at the 1920 x 1800 resolution? I know high or ultra settings would be impossible, definitely. But would I get decent FPS (20 -30) at a low - medium settings?

If turning down the settings dont work, would it be a alternative to play the more demanding games at a lower resolution? Would this affect the in-game resolutionin any way?

Cos, I really want the FHD screen since I use my notebook not purely for gamings, but also for watching movies, surfing web...

See, the thing is I don't want to choose a lower-res screen (just to have a good gaming experience) but compromise on my daily usage of the notebook (where a high-res would be ideal)...

I hope I didn't confuse anyone! Just need to clarify this before deciding if I should go ahead with the XPS.

    FOR FHD neither
    For WLED anything
You can just play games on low at above 1600x1200
    So be prepared

You can play all games at 1920x1080 with the 435m, I just did yesterday so I dont know what you're talking about ^

Gotta turn some settings down, but lowest frames I got were in ME2 and that was about 40ish. Certainly playable.

SC2 runs fine at FHD, just turn some settings to med and turn them shaders & shadows down.

I play F1 2010 in 1080 and pretty much everything on high and works perfectly.

Even with a high res screen, you can still turn the resolution down in game. That way you have the best of both worlds.

That's what I wanted to know also. Hehe!

I had similar questions that was mostly unanswered
    in another thread.

So I had to base my judgments from the Anandtech review
    and Notebookcheck.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/533544-dell-xps-15-l501-owners-lounge-42.html

    Quoting again from Anandtech.....

The 420M can get a few of the test games to break 30FPS at 768p and high detail settings, but it's simply inadequate for
1080p—or even 900p—gaming with the most recent releases. 335M maintains a slight lead at high settings, but it's mostly
academic as neither GPU is really able to handle our high settings.

Since the GT435M is just a higher clocked GT420M, that Anandtech reference can be the same for the GT435M.

Those are some of the reasons why I'm interested to know the downscaled image quality of the
FHD B+RG LED screen in 1366x768 resolution. Since 1366x768 and lower is the resolution
for optimal performance from the capabilities of the GT420/GT435M GPUs.

My questions about the downscaled image quality of the FHD B+RG LED screen was mostly unanswered by
    FHD B+RG LED screen owners.

Fortunately, just recently, amanmanglik and ninja2000 were kind enough to answer
my questions based on their personal gaming experience with the FHD B+RG LED screen
    in a downscaled resolution.

Woah, really good news. Like many others, I am definitely going for the FHD screen then!

There's no reason not to unless money is a factor.
If you have a hard time with small text, get NoSquint for Firefox and adjust the DPI settings in Windows.

I just got my xps 15 last night with the FHD. And I am quite pleased with the gaming results. I can play crysis on medium with a couple things turned down to low at the 1600x900 resolution and still get over 30fps. I can run far cry 2 all high and keep the rate above 25fps. If I turn it to ultra, it still never drops below 15ish fps. If I drop the resolution down to 720p, I can play almost all settings ultra and full AA. As shown in the previous video, pretty much any source engine game can be played fully maxxed out full AA framerate stays above 25fps, ie, Left 4 dead (1&2), Half-Life 2, Team Fortress. Torchlight runs fully maxxed over 35fps. I've played around with overclocking, with memory up to 1300, and clock up to 650. Doing that gains me around 3-6fps, and I have yet to get a gpu temp over 75C and a CPU over 79C. Even at stock clocks though, the gt 420m has really surprised me.

One game I have had trouble with was the original far cry, all I get is a foggy blue screen. I was reading online and it has something to do with the nvidia drivers. If anyone knows of a fix, I'd be very interested.

    ed.Oh I'm running the i5-460m (2.53ghz), 4gb ram, FHD screen, 500gb 7200rpm

I just played FS X at 1600x900 with most of it at medium with medium draw distances and it ran at a perfect frame rate, no stuttering. Plane and landscape detail at high, all else medium. Nothing on Ultra. I set frame rate goal to 30.
Although I think FSX is more CPU bound than GPU bound. However it does have to load tons of textures quickly, so if anything the DDR3 memory (instead of GDDR3 or 5) on the GT 435 is probably not helping as far as texture loading goes.
Looked fantastic (as far as flight sims go, we all know they don't have the graphical prowess of a modern FPS).

    Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone ended up getting the FHD screen on the XPS 15 and downscaling for games. If so, how were the results when downscaled? Any blurriness?

I'm in the same predicament now (should I get FHD, knowing the games I want to run will have to be run in 1366x768).

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,
    tsai

Hey, I have my GT420M OC'd to 650/900 and I can play Street Fighter 4 at 1920X1080 with everything maxed, C16xQ AA and frame rate set to fixed and it runs at a smooth 60FPS.
For Black OPS I play at 1600x900 with everything maxed and 2xAA and get around 40FPS and I don't notice any blurriness with the downscaled resolution. I can play Black OPS at 1080p without AA and get 30+ FPS.
I'm using driver 267.76 downloaded from NVIDIA website, the FHD screen is gorgeous and worth every penny.
