This driver seems to resolve issues related to output jack sensing and Skype where if you had a set of headphones plugged in the audio would switch back and forth between the internal speakers and the output jacks for about 5 seconds. Issues where unplugging an external device from the output jack would cause the machine not to switch back to the internal speakers and cause any audio-related applications to crash seem to be resolved as well.
For those of you with a Studio 15, I'd recommend going into the properties for your output device (typically "Speakers / Headphones"), navigate to the Enhancements tab, and check "Disable all enhancements" which will cause the IDT Audio Effects to be turned off typically resulting in clearer sound (NOTE: If you use the SRS Premium software, performing these steps will turn that off as well). I know this thread is geared more towards the Studio XPS line-up, but this driver is also available for the Studio 15 so I thought it would be worth mentioning - perhaps these steps will also provide clearer sound on the Studio XPS models as well?
I typically use the in-box Microsoft High Definition Audio driver as it provides proper jack sensing (changes the volume automatically if you plug in a set of headphones). However, this latest driver seems to be quite improved over the previous release which I believe was 6217... -

I decided to install it even though I'm not having serious issues. It seems it lowered the CPU usage of audiodg.exe by 50%+ percent when playing music, and by 100% when not playing music/sounds. Audiodg.exe was previously using 1% of my CPU at all times

I still disable SRS in the registry just go prevent it from loading and wasting RAM/resources.
Also, this driver is old news. Dell's already released 6.10.0.6272.

Dell has an even newer driver then what the OP posted. Just use the latest driver thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=471419
version 6.10.0.6272 as oppose to 6.10.0.6267. -
This new driver is terrible, it doesn't work for about half of the aplications.
Firefox didn't work, IE didn't work, some of the windows sounds didn't work. This really isn't an improvement, I just reverted back to my old version of IDT (the one before the one OP posted) and now it works fine. Idk whether it's a problem with me having 64bit though.
You say there is a newer version for the 1645? So there'd be no problems running it on the 1640 then? -
What do you mean by it doesn't work ? Mine is working fine..
-
It diesn't work in that I tried to play a youtube video and no sound came out, I looked in the volume mixer and firefox didn't even have a slider, which probably means windows didn't even recognise it as a program which makes use of sound.
I reverted back to the old IDT and eveything works just fine now. -

So I'm soon to be a new SXPS owner. What are these things? IDT and SRS?
-
I personally turn it off because it sounds bad and it causes problems
FINALLY....IDT driver from DELL....
