Hi guys!
Over the last days, my XPS 17 has been making a lot of noise.
I'm not performing any memory intensive tasks, so that isn't the reason.
At this very moment, I'm only using 5% of the CPU and it's making a loud noise.
This is very annoying after some time.
Is their anyone who has faced the same issue or have a solution?
Let me know!
Thanks in advance!

Try download CoreTemp or HWMonitor and check your CPU GPU and HDD temps. Maybe one of them has recently increased.
-
Well, I've tested them both, but they only allow me to monitor them.
I can't find an option to lower the speed of it -
What are the temperatures reported?
-
I've included a screenshot of the temperatures.
Even now, when I'm just posting this, the fan is working pretty loud.
-
Well, I've read your post (very helpful), but I'm not able to reinstall my laptop.
(I have to use my laptop constantly for school and losing a day by reinstalling would be disasterous.
I never had all the junk on my laptop (I did a fresh instal with an original w7 copy = no junk). So McAfee isn't an issue (I'm using avg, btw).
Do you have figured out which driver caused the issue?
And is their a program that can control the fan/processor speed?
That would be very helpful -
Can you tell me with CPU-Z the core speed of your machine? Idle must be 798 Mhz, if this is not the core speed when it is idle, them something is wrong.
What BIOS do you have? Have you updated ALL Drivers from Dell's web page, or using the Resource CD?
What is your NVIDIA Driver?
Meanwhile, I'm trying to isolte what driver with is causing the problem.
I update the Intel Wifi driver with dell driver. NO PROBLEMS at all.
I update the Intel 3000 HD vcard (v8.15.10.2455). NO PRBLEMS at all. -
Sorry for the very late response, but I'll give ya a heads-up of the past days.
I've completely reinstalled my laptop.
That means starting from zero back again and installing an official W7 image (without all the Dell shizzle).
I didn't need to install a lot of drivers (because most of them we're installed during the installation).
I've only installed the nvidia GT555-m driver (295.73) and the wireless adapter driver (Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 v.14.1.1.3 (1/05/2011).
I didn't install any specific drivers (besides the drivers that updated automatically via Windows Update).
And the problem persists....
I've updated my bios to A16, without any succes.
1 minute after boot, the fan kick in and doesn't stop until I close the lid or shut the laptop down.
I think I'm gonna update all my drivers and see if something magical happens (which is practically impossible).
If you have any suggestions, let me know! -
Let's provide you with some technical details.
--CPU--
All of my cores are running at 798 MHz, but I must say I did have 1 moment where the 4th core was running at 2100MHz (without doing some special).
--Task manager--
Nothing special to find here to.
I was running Photoshop when I took the screenshot, but that only influenced the RAM, not the CPU.
--DxDiag--
I don't know if this is usefull, but anyway here it is.
-
Looks normal for me, as the cpu usage is normal. Have you updated DirectX? Also use drivers from manufacturer or Dell, never Windows. normally they are crap.
Honestly, this looks like some kind of computer voodoo. It should work correctly from the start. It happened to me several times to install all from 0 and have the bug, start over and not have the bug, without touching anything!
I still thinking it is a problem related on drivers, but find out which is very complicated.
So far I've noticed some instability with updated audio drivers found posted on Dell's website. Default drivvers seems better. -
--Small update--
Currently, my laptop had a processor usage of 100%.
This means:
- Lagy laptop
- Even more fan noise + heat
I think I'll install all the Dell drivers from their site (except the audio ones).
Lets hope for the best -
lets hope so!

did you try to run dell diagnostic from cd/thumb. The fan test will try to change rpm and you can r/o fan controll unit problem. Also did you try to disconnect laptop from the power , remove battery and hold down power button for several seconds?
good luck. -
Well, I have some weird results to post.
I've ran those tests and the result was quite unexpected.
The fan worked normally (just like it should work) (how is that even possible?)
But after I rebooted the laptop, the problem returned, in a different form.
Now the fan works normally and sometimes it swtiches to the "fast & heat" mode (like it was before).
Weird stuff going on here.... -
Call Dell if you have the computer on warranty. That's not normal
-
Let's wrap-up what I did in the past day.
I've reinstalled my laptop (again) with the installation discs from Dell (I coudn't find my own discs, so I downloaded them from the net ( Reinstallation DVD DELL XPS 17 L702x 6.1 + Windows 7 Home Pre (download torrent) - TPB.
I did install as less drivers as possible, but I had some issues.
I couldn't update my Nvidia driver and the brigness/sound up and down buttons didn't work.
The fan problem still existed.
So I've decided to reinstall it again (with the offical W7 discs (without the Dell crap)).
Results: Atm the fan is working hard and loud. I've only used it for nearly 3 hours, so I'll see if it will change tommorow.
As a last resort, I might warn Dell about the issue. I do have a 3-year next day warranty, so that might come in handy now. -

The Realtek audio driver will cause your CPU to rise and fans to go on which makes the laptop warm. Just uninstall them and use the build in audio driver for Windows. It works fine. You can even tweak the sound better in the System Properties under the Enhancements settings.
-
-
-
Can you give me those drivers? Or at least a usefull link/driver number?
-
It does not matter if you use the default Dell Realtek drivers or the newest ones from Realtek. They all eventually hog the CPU power. Not at first but after a while it does. I removed them and the build in windows drivers give me no problems.
-
-
But I found this link -> Realtek HD Audio Drivers - Download
-
For some reason, my fan issues are instantly solved if I change the settings under Control Panel>Appearance and Personalization>Display>Screen Resolution to:
1|2. Multiple Monitors
1920x1080
Landscape
Duplicate these displays
I am only using the laptop display. Any ideas as to why this would radically change fan behavior? (I have a 702x with the 3D screen) -
Hmm, mine is set to "Only display desktop on 1"
And I also don't have fan issues anymore -
I don't quite get it, but it works like a charm.
