So ever since the technician came out and upgraded my processor from the i7 720 to the 820, the fan has been coming on louder and more frequently than when i first got the laptop. Any ideas as to why? Is this something that can be easily fixed?

    Initial thoughts:

    - Presumably the 820 runs hotter than the 720.
    - Perhaps the tech didn't use any thermal paste or improperly applied it when making the replacement.

Try an app like RealTemp or HWMonitor to see what your temperatures look like, both at idle and under load. For reference, my 820 idles in the mid-40s and in the low to mid 60s under load. Note that I'm using GC-Extreme thermal compound, so stock temps will be a bit higher.

i was just thinking it was the thermal paste that might be the problem,

he just globed on some paste onto the processor and video and put the heat sync back on. from what I remember thinner layer is better and even coverage..

Whats the ideal method for putting thermal compound on this CPU, anyone also have links to easy disassembly (enough to get past the heat sync)

    My idle is 50 C and load is 80 with a 6-cell, lower with a 9-cell.

Ok, so put some Arctic Silver 5 on my processor/video and now my temps are 49 idle, and 73 Load. seems to have fixed my fan noise issue so far.
