The first problem I noticed when I turned the XPS on was the screen.
I was greeted by the Dell logo and instantly noticed tiny static-like blips appearing and disappearing rapidly throughout the screen (noise?).

And then the Vista setup screen looked even uglier with what seems to be some terrible banding (correct word usage?) of colors. A little like a low quality BMP file.

The only good part of the screen was the quarter inch on the left side, and the rest of the screen had a soft but noticeable off-yellowish stripes running vertically. Towards the center of the screen were some very noticeable artifacts with the "noise" as I described earlier running through it.

The screen defect becomes really noticeable when displaying shades of blue.

Another defect is the touch controls at the top. The rightmost volume control (volume up) does NOT work at all. All the other buttons behaved appropriately.

Overall disappointed that something this defective can come out of the warehouse.

Can you guys suggest me anything to resolve this problem?

Hopefully they'll toss in the earbuds and the cd case for causing me all this trouble! I'll certainly request it! :p

    defective
    1) return for refund, rebuy or another brand
    2) ask for a NEW replacement, not a refurb replacement

(ps, i got the earbuds and cd case after complaining a lot)

Ok, thanks. I'll ask for a refund. There were some great deals that I hadn't noticed when I purchased the system. That would save me a few hundred!

If I rebuy, would I have to wait another month for the system to arrive? I assume that a replacement would take less time?

I will definitely ask for a new replacement!

    Thanks!

replacement.. you must demand a new machine..... (or they'll send a refurb)..... and request free stuff(shipping, freebes) or some credit for the trouble

i guess u'll have to wait as long as ordering a new system now[demand faster shipping from the CSR].... no other choice, dell has too many parts shortages/delays :(

Ok, thanks again for the quick reply!

Dell better get on the ball... For being #1 in computer sales, you'd think they would be able to handle the delay situation better.
