    Hi,
i have found file transfer rate is noticeably low in my XPS M1530 machine. i was transferring 1.7gb file from I partition to G partition. it started sending 22mb/sec. then there after i found it to b reduced to 10/12 mb/sec sometimes extremely low like 3 or 4mb/sec. why is that? how can i keep it constant at 22 or 20 mb/sec transferring rate. my OS is VISTA ULTIMATE AND HDD Hitachi 250 GB with 5400rpm. THANK U GUYS IN ADVANCED.

Vista has slow transfer rates... although I'm not sure if that's unusually slow for Vista.

I've noticed this as well. My guess is that Vista is moving the files while simultaneously trying to index them.

Yes Vista does try to index them when moving. However, there was a bigger problem that I believe was fixed by service pack 1; have you made sure you've downloaded this - or was it already on your machine when you bought it?

Well if that is indeed the problem, turning off indexing should work. The question is, is it worth it? If you constantly search for files etc it might not be worth the hassle.

It may also be down to other factors I guess, like how many files, what type they are. Have you ever noticed that transferring one file of xGb and lots of little files that equal XGb take different amounts of time, and even different file types can I think.

I might just be talking nonsense though; I am tired, it is 2am in the morning here and I really should be in bed.

Yea I notice that too. I think that's related to the indexing. I remember running and HD tune and getting an average rate of maybe 65mb/s I think, what I want to know is why I can never even reach half those speeds

Like we said, it's just how vista works. If you want you can turn off indexing and see if that makes a difference. Go to My Computer, right click the drives, go to properties and uncheck index this drive. Use at your own discretion as you'll be losing instant search functions.

that is a perfectly acceptable transfer speed to an external hard drive. the problem that the OP was referring to was transferring from one partition to another on the same computer i believe.

in regards to the OP, since you are transferring from one partition to another on the same drive, you are experiencing an issue with trying to read/write at the same time. standard mechanical hard drives can only either read or write, not both at the same time. it starts off reasonably fast, but slows down as whatever windows has cached gets used up, and it has to start reading and writing at the same time.
