So, i finally pulled the trigger on my Dell Studio XPS 16. I planned on waiting on Tax Free weekend to purchase however with this being Dell's end of quarter, the prices just won't be as good. I didn't go as high on the specs like most of the users on this forum that own this system but for a laptop that will be mainly be used for wireless internet access and movies I think I got a hell of a system at a great price. So as a Dell employee, I know what and where the best deals are on each and every system. And I finally decided on e-value code ref-DYDWFN3 which is Dell's best deal on the 16 if you aren't looking at the 1GB HD4670 video card. I unfortunetely declined the 9-Cell battery because of the price jump to $180 from $100. I will purchase it 3rd party for less than $100 new. So here is what I ended up getting, plus the price listed underneath the specs:
DELL STUDIO XPS 1640 with
-Obsidian Black High Gloss Finish with Leather
I love the Merlot Red,however I am not fond of the red leather. I would have liked to order Obsidian Black w/o leather but I didn't want to risk not liking it without it since i've never seen that version without the leather.
-Microsoft Windows Vista with SP1 Home Premium Edition 64-bit Edition English W/ Free Ugrade To Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition
I have Vista Ultimate 32-Bit on my Dell XPS 420 desktop and have used 32-Bit Vista Premium. And with my needs,Vista Ultimate just wasnt worth the price. And with Windows 7 around the corner, this promo saves me lots of money to upgrade.
-Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 Processor (2.4GHz/1066Mhz FSB/3M L2 Cache)(w/ Intel Centrino 2 Technology)
The laptop I purchased last year was a T8300 and it was more than sufficiant, thats why I decided to go only 1 step up from the P7350 to the P8600.
-16.0 inch Wide Screen 16:9 1080p Full HD RGBLED LCD W/2.0 MP (with Facial Recognition)
I love this feature. It will look amazing with Blu-Ray. I am a huge supporter of Blu-Ray so this combo was a must have for me.
-512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3670 Dedicated Graphics Card
I am not doing gaming or rendering at any point so I didnt really consider the 4670
-4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM3 at 1067MHz (2 Dimms) Memory
The price difference from 4GB to 5,6, and 8GB just wasn't worth it with my needs.
-500GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive W/ Free Fall Sensor
I would have loved to opt for a much smaller HDD or a SSD however this was a free promo and it's the best option. So I couldnt argue.
-Blu-Ray Disc Combo (DVD/CD read/write + BD read) Slot Load Disc Drive
I opted out for the Blu-Ray burner because I have one on my Dell XPS 420 desktop which I have yet to even use in 1 year.
-Integrated Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Hi-Def Sound Card
I'm not a fan of Express Card sound cards and I do not plan on hooking this laptop up to any external speakers, plus the built in sub and speakers sounds actually pretty decent.
-Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Internal (2.0+Enhanced Data Rate)
A must have feature however I havent yet decided on which mouse I will purchase. I use to own the Mogox54 but never really used it.
-Intel WiFi Link 5300 802.11AGN Half Mini-Card Wireless Card
I had bad dropouts with my older 4965 so I opted for this systems best Wi-Fi option.
-Standard Back-Lit Keyboard
It was standard.
-Integrated 10/100/1000 Network Card (NIC/RJ45)
I own a Gigabyt router so it was a perfect match.
-56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
I preffered the 9-Cell,but Dell upped the price from $100 to $180 so I will purchase from a 3rd party for much cheaper.
-Microsoft Office 2007 Home and Student Edition W/ Word,Excel,PowerPoint and One Note)
It was a free promotion however it will be replaced by my licensed copy of MS Office Enterprise 2007.
-2 Year Limited Warranty W/ 24X7 Tech Support and On-Site Service After Remote Diagnostics
-2 Year Complete Care/Accidental Damage
-2 Year Lojack Theft Protection (Pre-Installed)
I wasn't sure if I would keep the sytem past 2 years so I opted for there full 2 years of all services.
-McAfee Internet Security 12-Month Subscription (Pre-Installed)
I've used McAfee for years with no problems, but this may be replaced by my newly acquired copy of Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.

Maybe he thinks we're blind or something...
Well, I like the system, overall seems a pretty good deal. -
I think the real question is why wouldn't you write like that?Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
I have a similar system as well but without the BR....got it off the outlet for a steal of a price. Since then I have undervolted it which hasn't helped the idle CPU temps much but has seemed to help overall "feel" of the machine. So I highly recommend you look into this. I also picked up a MS BT presenter mouse....I think it was the 8000??? Either way it connect perfectly without the dongle or software loaded. Though I don't think the presenter buttons work w/o the software. Check it out...I got mine for less than 25 bucks delivered. And good luck with the new machine
Finally, just purchased my Studio XPS 16!
