Finally, my XPS 1530 being replaced due to GPU fails!!

That's ridiculous. You shouldn't have to go out and spend money just to have the laptop work the way it should. If you have the time you'll very likely be able to get a replacement for that because of the throttling issue (as I did with my 1640).

As far as the heat, the 45nm i7 quads don't really belong in anything other than large laptops or ones with exceptionally good cooling. Just today I watched an i7-720qm reach 88 Celsius in a G51J.

Cin, just for a comparison, what sort of temperatures do you reach on your 1647?

 

Called tech support again. First rep told me that I can't get to supervisor, since none can speed up process. Called back, and after 49 mins of waiting on the phone, I was told someone will call me back with the solution. The same rep just called to inform me that her supervisor couldn't reach their dispatch department, and that she ( like all others) has send email to their dispatch dept too. She told me to wait another 24 hs for an update. I guess, waiting game continues.

Sorry to hear you are in the same boat cbaty. Could we add cost of popcorn to the price of the laptop too? And hair dresser bill for covering greys . At this point, all I can really do is find this silly, because this reminds me of the games from childhood,when we kids asked for something that we knew we can't have it. Still we enjoyed watching them sweat to come up with always new exuses to avoid the real answer.

yea its a little unfortunate but i did get this laptop for free, so i didnt mind shelling out $40 to get a cooler. Its a whole lot cheaper than me buying a new laptop lol.

So my computer just shut down on me again. Last time I checked the temps before it shutdown, CPU was at 103 and GPU at 100. This thing is literally a heater now, but the problem is, it's no longer cold. Time to email higherups? I think so.

 

Just go on live chat and tell me your situation. Also explain that this isn't acceptable and causing you a lot of trouble. Hopefully that will do the trick or ask the rep to connect you to manager or supervisor!

Btw, how many repairs are done on your laptop?

Hey, I tried to order a new Mouse that Dell came out with via Dell Chat..and it was a "fail" via FF & IE..so I tried Google Chrome (Beta) version..and surprisingly, it worked for me. Have you tried Google Chrome Beta?

I meant cpu temps, since the only difference between the 4670s will be from the heat generated by the cpus on the same heatsink. The -163 Celsius temperature reading on the shader is pretty cold!

Check your cpu temp with hwmonitor or something similar for a comparison between his i7-720qm and your Arrandale (can't remember whether you have the i5-520 or i5-540).

I am having a little issue with the XPS1530 I have, the computer starts and as soon as it goes to the login screen I insert the password and it makes a squeaky noise and the monitor goes off.

Is this because of the graphics card? I have never played any games on this laptop as I gave to my wife as soon as I bought it.

Sorry in advance if this is not the appropriate thread for this issue and thank for any help.

 

Sounds like it if the monitor is working fine prior to you putting in your password. Couldn't be the LCD unless nothing shows up ever, or if there are some serious defects.

That's strange. Dell live chat works fine for me every time. I used it couple of minutes ago, and all the times I have used Live Chat I was connected in less than 30seconds.

I've also been problem free in that respect, I always use Firefox.

Maybe cleaning your cache with CCleaner would help.

Ok, I was just read my specifications for the new laptop that I'll be receiving. It's a Studio XPS 1640:

XPS 1640, Intel Core 2 Duo T9550(2.66GHz/1066Mhz FSB/6M L2 Cache)

Should I be pissed that it's not a 1645 or 1647? I don't feel angry lol. I almost feel as if I got a good deal because I won't have to worry about heating or throttling issues due to the i5/i7 processors. The only thing I'm worried about is the lack of the 4670 graphics card.

**Basically all I wanna do with this thing that's intensive is play video games on low settings (not one for high graphics, I'd rather run at over 9000 FPS).

Is there a noticeable difference between the 3670 and the 4670?

 

First of all, the 1640 does have throttling problems. Also, i7 is far to generalized, it's the Clarksfield cpus (quad 45nm, in the 1645) that have more heat and throttling issues. The best model is the 1647 which has Arrandale cpus (dual core 32nm).

The difference between the 4670 and 3670 is huge. A 3670 is actually worse than an 8600m GT. They're fairly close, but the 3670 is far more cpu dependent, and can't anti alias without halving the frame rate (whereas the 8600m GT drops only a few frames per second with x2 anti aliasing).

If you like anti aliasing and want to game on it, you definitely need the 4670.

I initially thought my claims that the 8600m GT was better than the 3670 when talking to Dell about replacements were a bit of a stretch, but I was severely disappointed when it turned out to be true lol.

 

Yeah it's definitely time for upper mgmt. I actually have an assignment due tomorrow that is a complaint letter so I wrote to Michael Dell. I'll be adding some stuff to it and fire it off sometime this week hopefully. I have an exam and assignments this week and finals next week so it's hard to find some time for it.

 

Ya everything is good about that replacement except the 3670. I was quite worried i would receive a 3670 also but i got lucky. The 4670 is wayyy better. I would definitely complain and say that you've done some research and have seen that it is weaker than your previous 8600m gt. If it is a big deal to you dont rest until they change it!

 

It took me about an hour on Dell Chat, but I was approved for a system exchange. My M1530 specs are the following:

-Intel T8300 CPU (2.4 GHz)

-8600M GT GPU
-1440 X 900 LED Screen

The supervisor who I talked to said that I will be receiving a SXPS 1640 (which I assume will be refurbished). I won't know for sure until a couple of weeks from now when I am supposed to approve the specs of the replacement.

Are there any issues that I should be concerned with regarding the SXPS 1640?

 

I was also approved of SXPS 1640 about 7 days ago. Yesterday I received my dispatch number and now waiting for the specs to show up on the dell order site which may take 10 days or so.

I have been reading that SXPS 1640 has problems on CPU/GPU throttling. Will see how it goes when I receive mine. If video encoding goes well then I am fine, else back to Dell Support Lolx !

 

They're telling me, "The 4670 graphics card is not available on the 1640 laptop, only the 1645's and 47's."

Well, it took me about 15 minutes, but I convinced Dell to give a Studio XPS 1647 rather than a Studio XPS 1640. Still don't know the specs.

 

Lots of problems with the sxps 1640/45/47. I was lucky enough to get a 1645 with a 130watt processor which i think fixed the cpu throttling. However, my gpu throttles like mad as the computer has major cooling problems and the gpu throttles at 84 degrees, which it reaches easily. I have ordered a cooler that should arrive tomorrow and if that doesnt fix the gpu throttling ill be back on the phone with dell again.

First of all, I'm in no way defending Dell's ridiculous bios that throttle at 84 Celsius. What I think is that the Clarksfield cpu is actually what manages to heat the gpu to the point of throtting. ATi gpus run very cool in my experience, and Clarksfield cpus run very hot. It's all because it's a single heatsink design.

They should really just give all unhappy 1640/1645 users a 1647.

 

Could be, i didnt think ati gpus were that hot either. But the bottom line is still that there isnt even close to adequate cooling on my 1645, i mean the vent design...c'mon. whos dumb idea was it for the screen to block half the vent?

 

Honestly, we will continue to ask that question until we get tired of asking it, and I don't think we will ever get an answer sadly. IMO, that person (or those people) that made the decision to position the vent where they positioned it, should be fired for making such an illogical decision (and don't tell me that the decision was logical at any point in time). If they saw that they'd be putting hotter CPUs in their system later down the line, they should have thought it through thoroughly and designed accordingly. Quite frustrating that people can't even play older games (or really any game at all) without the system throttling on them...ridiculous... (Raise the limit at least!!)

 

One way around that keeping much of the design the same would just be to have the vent on the side with the fan in the same location, possibly moved a half inch inward to accommodate the heatsink.

I have found that with Dell, it's best to be firm, but polite. Make them want to help you.

I told the Chat rep that I was approved for a system exchange earlier and would be receiving a SXPS 1640 (which I appreciated). Then, I told the rep that I did some research and found that the 1640 has issues that the 1647 fixes (heat/throttling). I told the rep that I do not want to experience anymore issues with my system and then I requested that I receive a 1647 rather than a 1640.

The rep placed a request for a 1647. I asked the rep if that meant I would receive a 1647. The rep replied "Yes, It will be XPS 1647."

If I do not receive the 1647, I have the chat transcript to prove that I was promised it. The thing I wonder is if this means I will definitely receive a new laptop. Last I checked, Dell Outlet did not have any 1647's (maybe I missed them)...

 

Does the 1640 have worse heat/throttling problems vs the 1647? Cause if it does I didn't know. Time to call dell once more.

 

So I started my own thread a week ago, but Cic pointed me towards this one. Dell was going send me another M1530 replacment.. and they actually sent me another one... refurbished. Now I always keep my laptops clean, and I freak when I get a smudge or a scratch... the one they send me was scratched, smudged, some of the metal on the back was bent outward, as well as I entered in the ST number, and was able to pull up all the Calls regarding this replacement they sent me.

I called Dell and now there sending me a new XPS 16. Here are the specs:

But heads up, if you have a m1530, and you want an exchange, be sure to ask straight forward for a diffrent model, or they will send you a refurbished replacement. I was nice and to the point with my dell rep, and he even let me choose most of the specs on my Studio XPS 16. Just tell them your tired of the issues with the m1530, youd like a replacment model. If you don't say anything... they will send you the same model, used.

 

lol i wouldnt count on that. i got a new 1645 as a replacement and it has just as many problems as my m1530, this is getting really frustrating!

 

Well, finally here is an update: as of tuesday nite, I have not heard from anyone although promised different, so I called in and was told that someone will be calling me in next week ( which would be the fifth week of being aproved and having a dispatch #) with an order number. At this point, I couldn't take it no more, so I emailed all emails that cin has posted ( Cin, thank you, thank you- did I say thank you enough ). 7 hs later, I received call from Mr from resolution center ( with note it is in regard to email that reached Dell's corporate office). Today ( 2nd business day) he called to let me know I am getting my laptop tomorrow. All I know is that it will be refurb XPS 1645. I do still have almost 2 ys of warranty, should something go wrong with that lappy- and I finally get to do tons of catch up for the past 3 months.
I was wondering if anyone can "decipher" what is that I am getting. Thanks in advance for any help. Right now I feel like dancing, no matter what is in there, but I would lie to say it does not tickle me to know what can I expect from the new toy.

At this moment I am still soooo happy...but...the guy from resolution center and also my "case owner" from XPS tech support ( who also called me yesterday and today for change), have told me to call back with any questions or concerns. Do you think I should try my luck with RGBLED or just take it as it comes. I do really feel blessed with the specs as I do not do any gaming, but I do a lot of photo and video editing/video watching? I have had the WXGA TruLife on 1530, will I notice difference ( that is if I can recall how the picture was, as it was months ago). Sorry, so many questions, but I am sooo excited-if not even more then when I ordered my xps 1530).

 

When I had a 1640 for short amount of time, I had it with the 900p display. Even that felt like a significant increase in the amount of space to work with, as I also had a WXGA on my old M1530. I really liked the wled on the Studio XPS 16, it may have been the nicest wled I've ever seen. I specifically noticed that blues looked much better than any other screen I've used.

Oh guy's I got myself a new Dell Wireless Nano Mouse for my lappy, it's quite nice!! I strongly believe it's priced appropriately. It arrived yesterday, and I've been using exclusively since it arrived.

If anyone is looking for Basic "Nano" Type 3 Button, Optical 1000 DPI, Wireless Mouse..I would suggest this to accompany their XPS 16xx. LINK It's very :light:!

I am happy getting the laptop replaced, but I don't want a black laptop (the reason why I got a blue M1530). Do you think it they would let me get a white 1640 instead of a black one? And should I wait to ask them for a different colored one after I receive the replacement? (It is in production right now, so another 7 days build time)

I doubt theyll change it for you, when you are getting a replacement you are usually in a very low bargaining position, especially for something like aesthetics. Usually they just send you what they have in stock. But still, id email and ask, you never know !
