Hello All:
I know there are thousands of discussions about fingerprint readers, but as many as I've read, I haven't found one that quite describes the problem I'm seeing.
I have a new Dell XPS M1530. My fingerprint reader works well (which seems like I might be in the minority). When I log in, I can use it successfully to bring up the control center, enroll my fingerprints, etc. Then I can login in using the fingerprint reader and everything is great. I can login, lock the screen, and get back into my session time after time. So now the problem. Whenever I go to the Switch User screen, the fingerprint icon switches from "Scan your fingerprint" to "Please connect the fingerprint reader". At this point I have to login using my password. Once I log in, I can once again use the reader, and if I lock the session, its back to "Scan your fingerprint" and everything works well. Until I go to the Switch User screen, when its back to "Please connect the fingerprint reader". When my wife logs in, the fingerprint reader seems to be completely off. When I try to start the control center or user enrollment from her account, nothing happens. WHen I bring up the device manager from my wife's account, the reader reports that it is working fine. An attempted Driver Update finds that no driver update is needed.
It seems like the only way I can connect the fingerprint reader is to login using my account - that seems to start it up and make it work as expected. Then the Switch User screen seems to disconnect it.
In case this helps - its a Dell XPS M1530, running 64 bit Vista. I hope I've described the symptoms well enough. Even though I've only had the laptop for a short time, I've found that I kind of like the fingerprint login ability. I can login while holding the baby, etc.. If anyone has seen this behavior, or has any good suggestions, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
