    Hey,

here an interesting screenshot from a German user who just received his new XPS 17. His S-ATA information tool reads out also chipset and revision, look down right:

Seems that a few more users confirmed this right now...
    Your opinion?

    hmm this is strange...

the dell xps17 uses 3 sata ports at least..

    HDD, CD player, EXT SATA.
    So this is very strange.

maybe the software dont recognize the new B3 and sees it as a B2? i have no idea.

Or Dell just figured that the Esata port won't that much use, the chance of failure is small, and the potential cost of replacing the motherboard down the road was less expensive than delaying the laptop to wait for B3 boards. Remember that the B2 SATA ports only failed when Intel overvolted them to increase stress on the board and simulate aging and heavy use. It's possible the you'll never even have a problem with it, though I'd be kinda pissed if I did.

Kinda, yeah. I bet that 99% of XPS17 customers never even notice it.

do you think dell really would go trough that much of a negativ publication??
    isnt the software mistaking here.

the l502x topic reports someone that read out B2 also but further checks reported that that program was wrong.

I dont think many programs can pick out B3 already because the first are just rolling out the factorys.

You're probably right, it would be extremely unethical, nevermind probably illegal, of DELL to still be using the affected SB chipset and revision B3 started shipping on Feb 14th.

Still DELL are quite well known for balls ups, just look at all the UK L702x owners whose machine are turning up with US keyboard.

I'm member of italian forum too.
I can confirm that first XPS17 L702X arrived in this italian forum was step B2.
All programs used to check confirm this.

XPS17 come out before B2 scandal.
Perhaps Dell is trying to gain even with the notebook removed from the market and already repaid by Intel?

As I remember, the XPS 17 L702x official launch was cancelled just because of this, and appeared weeks later than planned on the Dell website. Not?

Maybe yes, but configurator pages were already on-line.
I think the marketing XPS17 was very forward and notebooks ready for sales, before cougar point bug is discovered.

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here. I had originally ordered a 701x on 2/4/11 and we had to cancel the order when the EDD got pushed out to 5/4/11. I waited a little, and saw the 702x get released and had to wait for SMB to do some magic for me to order it. I finally ordered mine on 3/7. I would really hope the reason for all the hassle I went through was because they replaced the faulty boards (chips?). And now I ordered a 1080p with 12 GB of ram and I have a feeling I'm going to be in a waiting game again. UGH!!!!
