We have two XPS m1330 at home. Wife's computer started to show a 1" wide green vertical bar on the screen (in Windows and in BIOS). The bars appeared randomly with no temperature- or time-dependent manner. After reading posts here regarding bad video cards, I assumed that was the reason. Wrong...
Apparently, my wife lifts her computer by one hand holding the right top corner of the laptop with her thumb and putting other fingers on the back part of the screen. Of course this puts stress to the part of the screen (about an inch right to the DELL logo on the bezel) and bends the screen inwards (we have LED screens). She did this in front of me yesterday while moving the computer and the green bar appeared. Then, knowing what it was, I just pressed the lower part of the bezel next to the logo and the bar was gone. I can reproduce this by pressing the back of the screen at the same location to make the bar appear again.
I thought the LED screen connection was loose, so I removed the bezel, removed the screen and unplugged/re-plugged the connector. Without putting the bezel on, I turned on the computer and pushed the lower part, and the bar appeared again. So, it is not the connector. Unfortunately, the lower part of the screen is where all the chips/connections/electronics for the screen is located. I am afraid that something is damaged there from the physical stress.
I guess I'll call DELL to get a replacement and show her how to lift the computer from the sides using two hands![]()
Found the source of green vertical bars on the screen
