    Hi guys,

I intend to get the Studio XPS 16 laptop ASAP (at least as soon as Dell Hong Kong decides to restock the SXPS 16). However after reading a few posts here am slightly concerned about the dips in frame rate ppl are experiencing while gaming. I do understand that it's only a mid range graphics card however someone even said that the frame rate dipped in Left4Dead.

Confusing part is that it runs smooth for awhile then suddenly dips for a bit and then back up to speed. Is this an overheating issue?

Any advice would be sweet. Thanks.

Is it difficult to reapply thermal paste? Does it make a real difference? Any walkthroughs on how this is done? And what about undervolting? Would that help? Though I've heard that undervolting makes your processor/gpu slower...bad for gaming...

As I am a complete noob when it comes to applying thermal paste, would you be willing to give me an insight into how you did this?

    I don't own a studio xps 16...but I'm very close to buying one :)

First time can be a little nerve racking, but what i do is put a little bit in the center of the GPU/CPU die and spread it with the heatsink but i've included a li nk to how its done opn the 1340 with pics just dont put any on the northbridge cuz it has a pad yes i Idle at 43'c compared to 58' c on my GPU , Undervolting is a great thing IMO and no there is no performance loss just lower temps excellent for gaming because everything stays cooler therefor you can game longer

If they find out possibly(not sure) but will they be able to tell not likely at all, i feel benefits outweigh the risk everytime ive changedd my TP and had techs come work on it never heard "ohh you changed your thermal paste warranty voided" cuz they couldnt tell

I Used SHin Etsu G751 harder to work with so if your a beginner i suggest using AS5=Artic Silver 5 easier to apply

there is another option in all of this get a replacement heatsink they come with dells crappy dry thermal paste strips but it should work i just prefer my own TP.

if you decide to use your own you can use rubbing alcohol to clean the CPU/GPU off or Artic Clean (what i use) then just apply a small amount and clean then apply your Thermal Paste ill include pics of before and after temps and a link for how to apply but again i dont think you should put any on the northbridge because it uses a pad(northbridge is the chipset between GPU and CPU)
what i did was put a thin line down the length of the CPU and GPU and then applied the heatsink straight down and shimmied them a bit to spread evenly then from there you just screw the heatsinks down then i left my comp for almost 20 hours to sit and cure way more time then needed (some products you can apply then use your comp in a few minutes) i just let it sit had things to do used my other laptop. so thats it fired her up and checked GPU-z and was shocked at my temps then proceeded to benchmark RE5 at various resolutions never before attempted on 1920x 1080 but played flawless on medium settings ,so from what i've done come to the conclusion its the heat

Artic Silver 5 is a good one if your not used to putting on thermal paste great thermal conductivity and easy to apply

And what is the best overall, not looking at ease of applying? (and how much can one applying technique differ from another? :))

some say AS5 some say Shin Etsu i think Tuniq TX3 is the best but thats my personal pref expensive and really difficult to get on right but when you do nothing compares they have these ones that you spread on like nail polish now practically fool proof
