Dell Technical Support is your friend as far as "getting it working" after a clean install. I must note, however, that Dell's drivers are often out-of-date relative to the manufacturer (NVIDIA, Intel, etc.) so you'd be better-served to check those websites as well.

I always do a clean install on a new laptop "just because." Uninstalling software can leave cruft behind, and while it may not affect performance, it's too much for my computer-OCD.

I did a clean install on my XPS 1640 and lost the facial-recognition software as the downloads on Dell's site are "updates," not full installers (the error is something about a previous version was not found). I have heard (through searching but not tried myself) that it can be installed from the driver/software disks that ship with your computer, then updated from files on Dell's website.

firstly I used the Dell Install Guide to help me when I did a fresh install (L702x)

Windows 7 Manual Reinstall | Dell UK

and after speaking to Dell tech support, they guided me in the direction of where to find the full versions of the software which were installed (PowerDVD, Roxio etc.) Here's the link

    https://smartsource.dell.com/Web/Welcome.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fweb%2fmain.aspx

After you've registered, you should see a list of software which are installed on your laptop. You're limited to 3 downloads per software.

You can also use the Dell Resource DVD that came with your laptop, however I've not really tried this, I only used the DVD for 1 driver which wasn't available on the Dell website.

haha same here, I don't trust these uninstallers. They more often than not leave traces of the software behind in folders and in the registry etc.

    I like it Clean with a capital C :D

put your Dell resource DVD in and it will scan your system and it should give you a list of exactly what hardware you have. Just match that with the drivers on the website. Or you can allow the DVD to install everything.

If for some reason you don't have a Dell DVD then just head over to the Dell website and grab all the drivers, they are all pretty self explanatory. I think you can let the website scan your PC as well, not sure about that. You will find that there are more drivers than you need as some people have tv tuners, mobile broadband included in their configurations etc.

Failing all that, do as Sovereign suggested and give Dell tech a call, they are very good :) Never experienced tech support like it, they seem to be 100% clued up and very helpful
