Thoughts on what dell is maybe cooking up? I think they are soon going to go surface book style with detachable displays. I have a feeling the 13 and 15 will at least have the option to do this.

Their primary concerns should be fixing the thermal problems that are plaguing XPS models currently. A SB-like gimmick is not really needed at the moment but proper VRM cooling is. Especially with the addition of more CPU cores in the form of the 8700H - if they re-use the same design as the current 9560 - the cooling and power delivery will be a disaster and probably end up with major throttling even under moderate load.

I'd also say fixing the cam and microphone placement is a must - it's a high-end luxury device with a webcam that is pointed at people's noses. Increasing the size of the top bezel is a small trade-off for having a usable webcam. I'd also like to see a better screen - preferably with less ghosting and potentially better BIOS support (so as to avoid the 9550 mess)

EDIT: Also, please Dell, stop trying to be Apple - Rose Gold XPSes are NOT needed. Thank you in advance,
    - a concerned laptop enthusiast.

I also think they will be pushing vr more too. Gonna be interesting times.

Pushing VR requires a lot of performance - I believe the 1060 is a minimum entry-point currently - that requires good cooling and more room. Their current XPS models cannot even keep a 7700HQ + 1050 performing optimally even with mods to the VRM design. I seriously doubt they'd be able to achieve anything in terms of VR capability with an overheating 1060.

I'd be curious to see if they could pull off a 1060 max-q in it. They should take some of their thermal cooling design from the 7577 even if that means a little thicker XPS. Hell while they are at it, lets add the XPS17 to the mix...

I'm waiting for the upcoming model XPS 15, as a combination of poor discounts, inferior build quality, and a offset keyboard have made me far less likely to purchase the Gigabyte Aero 15. Dell also has decent launch promotions compared to other laptop manufacturers. Dell should definitely make the next XPS 15 a bit thicker for better cooling, along with a redesigned thermal solution. I would also be interested to see a GTX 1060 Max-Q inside, even if it doesn't reach the same clock speeds as the one in the Dell Inspiron 7577. Even a bit of throttling isn't a huge concern to me as the current throttling is, where a few minutes of intense programs or games running on the laptop results in massive performance drops. Less light bleeding in the new model would be an improvement as well. I hope they keep strong battery life as a priority, as the combination of FHD and the 97whr battery produced really strong results for daily use. Speaker positioning and quality should be overhauled too, and I would like for them to be upfront besides the keyboard on either side. As for the XPS 17, I would really like to see that, but I doubt it, given how the 17 inch space now is occupied by either ultra chunky gaming beasts and budget ulv cpu laptops. I do actually prefer 17 inch displays for viewing the web and general productivity, as 15.6 sometimes feels inadequate. There seem to be no high performance thin and light 17 inch laptops in the low 5 lb range besides the MSI GS73VR, but that has so-so build quality and MSI's trademark mediocre battery life.

I think thats all the more reason to make an xps 17. They would be in rarified territory. I think they would get people that wanted a macbook pro 17 coming their way. I have used the Inspiron 17 7000 and its quite impressive. I will have to retire my acer 17" tank soon, and I would love to get an XPS 17 to fill that void. If not, I will be getting the 17" 7000 series.

Try Razer Blade 17. I don't think Dell will invest in thin 17" lappies because they have AW17s.
Main focus should be improving heatsink and fan speeds that responds to quick change in temps.

I have used razer's in the past. Never owned one...but I have since found out their C/S is fairly crappy. So, I would go dell because if I have an issue I cannot resolve myself, I can have a technician come to my house. The Razer is a fine looking and performing machine though!

I am still hoping they "book" some of their xps lineup. I would own one in a heartbeat. I would take the xps over the surface because of support again. I have no MS store close by.

Sadly Razer doesn't seem to support any country, lol

Reading people horror stories in dealing with their support makes me realize I will never buy any of their products...

Sadly it's not just support. I've been following @pbhenry3 's channel and comments and Razer PCB design, apart from the 4K pro, is abominable. It really does make me ask the question how can they not see the glaring design flaws. Or maybe they put them in intentionally?

Same here. Their devices are AWESOME. I love the build design of them. But a no go with crappy customer service. The same reason I will never buy an ASUS product. Crappy build quality and zero support if anything goes south!

So after seeing the new xps 13 announced...I am hoping they make the 2 in 1 with the exact same power inside, but in a flip design. Come on Dell..I know you wanna. And so do I.....I will have two top spec 13 2 in 1's ordered right away, one in white, one in black...I am anxiously waiting for them!

After reading some of the new xps news etc. The new xps 15 will be unveiled about 6 months time. Interesting to see what they come up with there too. I am still thinking they are going to do a surface book type xps. MS seems to be their main target with the xps.

They dont design those laptop themselves. They have an exclusive oem deal. Razer has no clue whats inside in general. One of thei rbiggest advocates on youtube, Linus Tech Tips also had their complaints and most of the Blade systems tha tthe LTT staff exhibited various problems. From bent laptops during normal use to catastrophic hardware failure.Too bad that the Blade series look excellent. If they were reliable I would consider them, at least Dell and Alienware satisfy my needs. But competition is good for the market.

@RvN76 found an image of a 15-inch XPS 2-in-1 in an Intel 8th gen marketing PDF. . .

That is a delay vs prior XPS15 cycles.

But with the whole NSA/security PR disaster, I suppose Intel needs to regroup a bit...

I hope the battery capacity remains the same, although a slight reduction would be fine if the long term quality control of the batteries is improved. The smaller battery capacities of the XPS 15 2 in 1 and new XPS 13 are concerning.

Check here for news on the new XPS 13 - battery capacity is 15% reduced from the 9560.

I don't think the "intel fiasco" has anything to do with the xps 15 timing....I think they are redesigning it completely and it's not all finalized. No worries on the batteries. They will have great battery life.

The 9570 release date is well behind those of the 9550 and 9560 so that indicates that Intel's HQ chips are being delayed for some reason. Intel's 6th, 7th, and 8th generation chips are essentially similar and mature so these are probably not production challenges at Intel. That is why I think finding a some interim solution for the "intel fiasco" may be slowing things down. Could also be that Intel is overwhelmed with the recent rework in response to AMD. Who knows...

Frank Azor's recent public post stated the 9570 would be released when Intel released 8th gen HQ chips implying the XPS' timing is based on Intel's timeline. The "H" rather than "G" chips also implies a separate GPU (e.g. nVidia).

Complete redesign of the 9570 is speculation as the XPS 13 and XPS15 2-for-1 have the same basic XPS look. For the 9570, if Dell continues with a similar 2018 nVidia GPU and the similar 8th gen chips (albeit with more cores and lower clocks), there is not so much redesign. I think the dedicated nVidia chip will help differentiate the 9570 from the new 15" 2-for-1 so is my bet.

9th gen will be a different story...
