I don't know what the highest safe temp is, but 66C is what some laptops idle at. Yours will be fine.

Oh I did not see that.

Looks like it is then, they could not half the clock speed and still call it the same thing.

My god they are just confusing things massively now.

Just got my 702x and my 550m as well has the 144 shaders. Anyone mess with the bios and try to up the voltage yet? I have not really messed with alot of mobile cards allthough my main rig is running dual Asus 460's overclocked and overvolted (1.1v) i7 2600k asus maxiums extream 4.8ghz on water. To bad we cannot overclock the cpu's on these XPS's allthough I did watch the intel turbo jump it up to 2.8ghz (went with the i5 will upgrade at some point in the future)

Any information anywhere on these Nivida cards that would offer a good read?

Overclocking a sandybridge paired with a 555m would be silly.

I thought overclocking CPUs stopped making much sense after Intel introduced Turbo Boost, but I guess it's never enough for OC entusiasths ;) Although I'm not sure this would be at all possible, since TB pushes the CPU to its maximum operating temperature, so pushing it even further should trigger system reboot/shutdown.

Allthough intel's turbo boost technogly is nice you can get alot more out of the unlocked K series cpu's on a good motherboard. The intel turbo boost on a i7-2600 & (2600k) would boost upto 3.8ghz. Now on air the i7-2600k you are able to run a overclock of 4.2ghz that is a huge performance increase and with a good aftermarket air cooler you have no problems :) not mentioning the 5ghz + on water .. and exotic cooling :p

Back to the GT550m I notice that even on Nvidia's site that this card and the one Nvida is showing is differnt not just the shaders but other things.

Useing the latest version of GPU-Z (ROG Version 0.5.3)

Nvidia lists the 550m as :

    Nvida GPU-Z
    GPU/Mhz 1480 475
    Shaders 96 144
    Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) 11.8 16.8
    Memory Bandwith (GB/Sec) 28.8 32.0

From what I have seen on specs the memory frequncey was the same...

So what is going on here? It is closer in specs to the 555m then it is to the 550m on Nvida's site.

Not really sure what to think here...
Allthough with the latest drivers it does overclock very nicely ... but I just want to know what we really have going on in here..

Basically, Dell did not want to release two 555m models within their lineup.

    144 shader, 24 ROPs, 192bit DDR3
    144 shader, 16 ROPs, 128bit DDR3

The performance level is quite different so it looks like Nvidia let them call it a 550m (since there is not much room in the naming scheme).

So really Dell are being quite honest and trying the make things clearer.

Other people who have 555m notebooks are actually using the lower spec version but since they dont have a higher spec version on sale there is no confusion within their brand.

    Hi guys,
Just received my Dell XPS 17 with GT 550m with core i5. Very pleased with it so far. Maxes out every game I have tried. I have the 900p screen.

I have overclocked the gt550m to 620/1240/948. 11244 3d marks without any artificats. Have been playing New Vegas maxed out and my GPU temp does go up to a max of 75 while playing. Is this dangerous? I get no artificats and the game runs flawlessly. Should I decrease the OC?

    Thanks!

75 C is fine for GPU, especially on a laptop.
