    Hey,

what´s the difference between them, if I configure a XPS at Dell shop? "3D capable" has a extra charge of +40 Euro here in GER. Is this the price for Nvida 3DTV Play software, or what else? Thank you.

If you choose the 3d capable one you MUST choose the 3d LCD FULLHD screen... and you will lose the Nvidia Optimus...

    Other than that,they are identical

Anyone have this notebook and can post a GPU-Z screenshot? There are different 555M models, both have 192-bit bus width and 144 shaders, but some are GDDR3, while others are GDDR5. This makes a huge difference...

I think the one with 3d loses optimus + gains 3d. I'm pretty sure they have the same spec though.

Is there anyway to get the Dell site configure the XPS 17" with a 1080P display with no 3D and thus confirmed Optimus? Alternatively, is there a hack so that you can turn off the 3D and enable Optimus with the 3D model?

At the moment, there is no way to order the XPS 17 with a FHD NON 3D panel. You can order a 900p lcd and then swap with a FHD compatible panel.

We still have no information about Optimus hacks for the 3D version.

If you are not interested in 3D but want FHD, is it not possible to order the FHD 3D panel, but stick to the non-3D GT 555M graphics card? I see that this configuration pops up as an "incompatibility" on DELL, but I wonder if this is a real incompatibity or just a way to trick more money out of us. If it is possible, any idea if optimus would be available with such a configuration?

According Nvidia every GT555m is 3D ready. In order to see this 3D you need 3d screen, IR emiter and glasses.
IMHO it shouldn't be any difference if you use 3D TV trough HDMI port to see 3D signal with both cards, so for me its a one big marketing trick DELL to steal more money from us for 3d cards which are nativelly 3d. If the rest of the specs are identical, which is still not confirmed with GPU-Z shots its up to the drivers Optimus to work on both "3d" or non-3d version in NON 3D settings.
    Sorry for my bad english.

Optimus is not possible with 3D screen - if you wanna hack anything, you better be prepared to open your laptop and start re-wiring it, because it's a hardware problem with the way Dell made things

Ive been searching everywhere for results comparing the FPS for games in 3d and using non-3d while playing current games, using the GT555m 3gb, i was hoping someone could actually comment on the performance of the gpu!
    Thanks

I spoke to DELL today as I asked for a quote. I questioned this GT 555M non-3D vs. 3D issue. I'm not sure I believe 100% in the reply, but here it is...
It's possible to go for the non-3D graphics card; if so, you can only see 3D on an external monitor. To see 3D on the laptop screen, you need to pay the extra 40€.

I think they would have avoided lots of question if they had rolled up this cost with the screen update price, but I guess they leave the option for those who have absolutely no interest in 3D.

I'll likely pay the 40€ for future proofing, although my main focus is FHD.

Can't help with gaming graphics performance non-3D vs. 3D I'm afraid.

I thought I read somewhere (this forum maybe) 3d games cut your framerate exactly in half. Expect something along these lines.
