My computer came with McAfee. Should I keep that or get rid of it? What all do I need to keep my computer safe? I just don't want anything to happen to this computer since I've never spent this much money on one!

I recommend using Noscript with the Firefox browser. I don't know how good Mcafee is but I highly recommend Avast Antivirus free as an alternative and you should buy an external hard disk to use for backups. I use drive Snapshot but Acronis True Image may be more user friendly. I use Online Armour free but some of the security prompts can be cryptic and I have no idea concerning your level of knowledge on this matter.

i'm not a big fan of antivirus/extra programs running in the background since it slows down my computer overall and can conflict with some things.

i recommend spybot search and destroy. this program has a nice immunization feature which so far only works with firefox and internet explorer and maybe other web browsers but not chrome. this is a passive protection (aka doesn't need to run in the background) and it pretty much blocks tracking cookies and other dangerous sites.

i also like malwarebytes and *microsoft security essentials (edit: named it wrong).
anyways, as long as u keep a heads up when using the internet, you should be fine.

No, the good ones really don't. They'll make no noticeable difference on a fast computer like a current XPS.

Reidsmommy: For recommendations, both Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials are free, light on resource use, and found in independent test to be quite reliable. I use Avast on one computer and Microsoft Security Essentials on the other. I have used others including Norton, McAfee, etc., but I like the ones I'm currently using and am impressed by their reviews.

ive been using the built in mcafee program for nearly a year and have never had any issues or viruses. Have also used AVG before with no viruses with about 3 years use.

I just use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free, uses very little resources.

Got rid of Mcafee when the annoying desktop icon issue occurred...back to Avira again which I've used for years prior to getting the XPS

I use Nod32 on my laptop and my mothers computer. My older computer I gave to my grandmother I did not want to pay for another license of Nod32 so it had MSE which is fine for her.

I got rid of mcafee and just use Microsoft Security Essentials and use ccleaner or advanced system care 5 every now as a cleaning tool.

(I actually just reformat any computer I get before I use it)

I read some reviews of MSE and the only complaint was lack of updates. Is this true? They say it lags behind most other antivirus definitions which may result in less protection.

I use a combination of MSE and Malwarebytes, so far no complaints.

I also use and recommend Sandboxie which enables you to run any app, including your web-browser as a sandboxed virtual appliance. That way keeping anything malicious entering your system.

I use Eset Smart Security and is nice, I like it. For spyware I use Spyware Blaster and Spybot Search & Destroy. In another PC the same anti spyware but MSE and fine too.

The reviews I've read, in major publications such as PCworld and PCmag, of the current version of MSE say that it is updated frequently. I saw no such criticism. Reviews say that MSE performs well, offers good protection, and is light on resource use.

Malwarebytes + MSE or malwarebytes + custom install of Avast. The latest avast has some cool features such as hybrid cloud based.
