It seems that ordering an XPS 15 with 4 GB RAM and then plugging in your own bought RAM is an easy and cost saving approach. Can anyone who has done this suggest a source for getting the extra RAM and what kind they got? How much did it cost- so we can get an idea of how much we can save by this approach?

It is always cheaper to buy your own RAM rather than getting it through Dell. Dell charges you more to upgrade from 4GB to 8GB than it would cost you to buy a new 8GB kit.

As far as RAM goes, just go to newegg.com

If you have a dual-core i3/5/7 then get DDR3 1066. If you have a quad-core i7 get DDR3 1333. What brand doesn't really matter, they all work fine, and they all use the same Elpedia or Hynix chips anyway. Get whatever's cheapest or has the best ratings.

Apparently, there are three DDR3 1333s, PC3 10600, 10660 and 10666 (at least on newegg). What is the a difference and will they all work? Process range mostly around $50-60, with samsung at $74 at the highest point. This is of course for a single 4 GB stick.

They will all work, and there's no real difference. Personally, I'd go for the $50 Patriot stick with free shipping, but that's just me.
