I would def download CPUID hardware monitor, FRAPS and msi afterburner for overclocking to start with. You dont need them but are good programs to use for measuring temps, fps and overclocks (in that order).

I hoover my air vents once a week to prevent build up of dust etc, also hoover the keyboard and clean the screen with a dry microfibre cloth.

1st thing I would take the bottom cover off (Be careful when taking anything with plastic clips apart)Remove those stupid restrictive dust covers on the fan vents, intake under side.I noticed a temp reduction with that alone, before a repaste or anything.Sam said above, those programs are a great for keeping tabs on temps which can be an issue with the XPS,and take those 20 cent stupid plastic vent screens off!Btw they have a lighy glue on them and peel right off,I forgot the thread on here showing how with pics,It's super easy. And my fan issue disappeared after that also.

A repaste is repasting the factory thermal paste on the cpu and gpu but isnt needed unless your experiencing temps in the 90's. The touchpad is multitouch although i dont use it. What joe said will reduce temps but be aware more dust is likely to get into your system.

Yes I should've said that but I like you said vac my systems and use compressed air regularly and Ive had mine since June.My temps dropped 10 to 15 degrees! If you keep up on maintenence like sam advised you should be gold.(PS) the reason I love the screen tear off was before the new bios and even with it,my fan stopped the second I did that,I forgot the thread op who suggested removal of screens, but never the less It worked great for me.But definitely clean those vents and never leave the machine on a flat surface, that can restrict airflow severly, the cooling design in most opinions leaves alot to be desired. That being said there's alot of happy owners here and a little goes a long way.I just repaste all my systems, old habit. And Dell is known for blobbing paste all over or not using any, just stock thermal pad, there's a pic on here showing the stock dell paste job.The thread check/look up on here is a pain.Again though there's alot of great info on these forums, and every one doesn't have the same success or failure, that's just nature of the beast, what works for me may not work for others.Enjoy your XPS I hope you have the upgraded b+rg 1080p screen it's amazing.
