    Hello all,
I've been researching the prices on dell's 17xps and finally found a decent price. Currently if you go to dell.com and when you pick the 17inch xps there will be one with an instant $519 discount. It already comes with all the upgrades. 9cell batt, lit up keyboard, 3gb video drive, dual 500gb hard drives. All I upgraded was the memory from 6 - 8gb and the monitor to from 900p to the full HD 1080. Anyhow at the end of your build use coupon code QFSNKXG0P1S1BK for $100 bucks off. IT came out to $1270 plus tax...here it is. I hope this helps.

I like that configuration, except I'm leaning towards the 2720.

Does it let you choose a lesser hard drive (i.e. the 640GB) or are you stuck with 1TB? Also, has anyone ordered one of these on the phone? Some of these pre-made configurations don't let you choose the cheaper warranty or the cheaper virus software for some reason.... do sales reps over the phone allow you to make these changes to save some money??

Also, is there a timeframe as to when these coupon codes will expire?

Here's a free shipping coupon code that would have saved you $9 bucks.

    Current codes:

    8GHR80Q1PLLCF7 $350 off XPS 17 over $1500
    QFSNKXG0P1S1BK $100 off any XPS 17
    HLSKSR06S9ZG0F free shipping

Personally I came out best customizing the base model after realizing the coupon codes were pre-applied to the upgraded models but not the base.

I agree. I used the same codes and built up the base XPS 17 and got exactly what I wanted. I didn't need that big of a hard drive since I already have a 256GB SSD on order.

Isn't the "instant savings" from Dell still a better deal though? I priced out the "instant savings" model and the base model (plus coupons) and the instant savings model seemed to be a better deal.

I picked the following configuration on both...

    XPS 17
Genuine Windows® Home Premium, 64-Bit, English
    2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7-2720QM processor 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.30 GHz
8GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 Memory
    Backlit Keyboard - English
    17.3" FHD (1080p) with 2.0MP HD Webcam
NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 555M 3GB graphics with Optimus and TV Tuner
    1.0TB 500GB 7.2k HDD x 2 (**Choose 640GB for the base model**)
    Elemental Silver Aluminum
    Integrated 10/100/1000 Network Card
    Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 9
Tray Load Blu-ray® Triple Writer (reads and writes CDs, DVDs, BDs)
JBL 2.1 Speakers with Waves Maxx Audio 3 + Creative SoundBlaster X-FI MB 1.2
    Intel© Centrino© Advanced-N 6230 and Bluetooth 3.0
Microsoft® Office Starter: reduced-functionality Word & Excel w/ ads. No PowerPoint or Outlook
McAfee Security Center with VirusScan, Firewall, Spyware Removal, 15-Months (** 30-day trial for base model**)
92 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
1 Year Basic Service Plan (**1 Year LIMITED Warranty for base model**)
DataSafe 2.0 Online Backup 2GB for 1 year
    No Mobile Broad Band Selected
Recovery DVD for Windows® 7 Home Premium OS, 64bit, English

The instant savings model started out at $2103.99. With instant savings of $519 and a $100 coupon that comes down to a final price of $1,484.99 (before taxes/shipping).

The base model configured the same way came to $1928.99. With both the $350 and $100 coupons, it comes down to $1478.99 (before taxes/shipping).

    A difference of only $6.

HOWEVER, a few of the options couldn't be matched up exactly (showed in bold above). I had to choose the 1TB hard drive for the instant savings model (had 640GB on the base model). I also had to choose the 15-month McAfee trial (a value of close to $40) while the base model included a 30-day trial. The 3rd and final difference was the 1-year Basic Service Plan included in the instant savings model, as opposed to the 1-Year Limited Hardware Warranty I chose for the base model (because it cost $56 less).

So really, the instant savings configuration in this case is a much better deal.

It's cheaper to go with the OP's method if you want what the OP has listed. Otherwise, you can save ~$120 by configuring from the base model and building the same config minus one of the 500GB HDs.

I think the "instant savings" models would have worked out for me if I wanted dual hard drives. Like GoBoltz, I have my own SSD to install. As for McAfee, I'm of the opinion that it is "bundleware" of limited value and does not stand up to the default MSE included/available with Windows XP/Vista/7. My model:

Can you not just start with the "instant savings" model, call a Dell Sales Rep and have them remove one of the 500GB hard drives, the McAfee software, etc to save money (since it won't let you change it online)?

If you are planning on buying...don't settle on one price. Keep trying different configs, coupon codes etc. It took me a while to finally get this price.
Also, you get 3% cash back on this website below. It's not much but every little bit counts. Too bad I didn't know about the free shipping coupon code. Check it out...

Definitely. I created a spreadsheet which helped me to see the effect of playing around with the options. You could easily cheat yourself out of $100 if you're not paying attention.
