i (one day after a clean install, and a few other issues) had my fan on all the time... i kept trying all the stuff above, to no avail...
Turns out... its my HDD spinning... it goes in the BIOS, Linux live discs, everything... it sounds like the fan A LOT...
and if any one has any info or fixes for the HD always spinning... let me know! (and i tried having windows turn off the HD after inactivity, it doesn't turn off, iv tried diff bios's and reinstalls). Also, changing the acoustic mode of the HD in the bios does not help. and for extra info, the HDD light is not always on, its usually off![]()
and here is info from "crapp" as well, who also is having this issue.
HE determined that it was the HDD, and not the fan...
so im not alone this means.
Thanks!

If it sounds a lot like a FAN and always stays ON in BIOS, Windows and Linux, then most probably it IS the FAN. To me they make clearly distinguishable sounds, but if you are not sure, then take off the panel covering the heat sink assembly+FAN, and listen very carefully. First make sure what is making the noise.
-
well, i have listened carefully and taken off the back panel (both of us did)
the fan was not even going for me... and the sound was fromwhere the HD was...
and when i booted to linux (live disc) with the HD out it was silent... -
any one?

c'mon.... help us.

Bump, we still have issues!
-
okay, i have an idea here
have you both turned off indexing in vista? if not thats it !
go to you computer and click on your HD properties, on the bottom you should see " index for faster search" , disable it, and lets see if that helps -
I have XP, and yes its off...

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
If you guys simply have a noisy HDD, there's little you can do about it short of replacing the drive. I'm fairly certain this isn't totally uncommon with 7200rpm laptop drives - if you want the added performance you're going to have to live with the extra noise and vibration. You could try to pad your HDD with some sort of isolating material, but there probably isn't enough room for that to be truly effective. Else you could hunt around for a quieter 7200rpm drive, or look for a larger 5400rpm device.
-
nope, because this started after we had been using the laptops for some time.
Also, i replaced the drive with a 5400rpm drive, with no help (it diddnt fix it) -
Wait the sound was there from both HDDs?
-
yea... i swapped HDs with my dads lappy...
Mine was loud in mine, and quiet in his, his was quiet in his, and load in mine...
and its not the bios settings, they dont seem to do anything, and its not a bad flash, because i have tried countless bios(plural) -
Bump
we still have the issue -
Isn't there a setting in the bios, saying somehthing like, quieter, performance, bypass. At least there was on my E1505, and my M1530, try setting it to Bypass or quieter...
Also, Bumping your post every few hours doesn't help, people to answer you. Just wait a few days, a load HDD isn't a big deal. just have some music going, or something. unless it hurting the drive, it's nothing really to worry about. -
2. my last, not bump post was on the 29th, and the bump was at 10ish today (the 1st)
3. It is quite annoying, personally... and i dont see it being good for the drive -
If your under warrenty see if they'll send a replacement...
