So, i booted Windows up when i first got the 9550 today. It booted fine from the 1tb hdd.

I took out the 32gb cache and put in a sandisk x400 256gb m.2 ssd. Booted fine and i didn't change anything in bios.

The issue is... the hard drive isn't recognized in device manager or disk management but the bios did when i ran diagnostics and no issues were found with it.

How can i make it usable again? Does it have to do with anything with the OS still being on the hdd? The hdd didn't show up when you had to pick a drive to reinstall Windows to.

Go into BIOS. Set the disk mode off of RIAD, and onto SATA (sometimes called AHCI in some BIOS implementations).

    Hi kent1146,
I also set the disk mode to AHCI, no longer RAID, but my HDD 1TB still un-recognized

Previously, my XPS 15 had 32GB SSD + 1TB HHD, it came with pre-installed windows 10. After unzip windows 10, I splitted the HDD into 2 partitions: 250GB for system, apps,... and the remaining for data.

Today I took the 32GB SSD off, and replaced with Crucial 250GB M.2 SSD, then followed your instruction with the BIOS. But cannot find the 1TB HDD. Do I need to config something else? Pls instruct in details.

    Pls help!!!

    Thanks a lot!

If your 1TB drive isn't recognized at all in BIOS, or any disk-management utilities, and you have RAID turned off, then the drive isn't being detected at all by the system. The drive is either disconnected, unpowered, or defective.

As I shared, I can't find the 1TB disk in Disk Management.
Then I inserted back the SSD 32GB, changed disk mode to RAID in BIOS, and my XPS recognized the 1TB HDD which I store data only.
I don't know what happens to the 1TB disk. Or Dell did something funny on it ...?

put the files on a usb drive, when windows setup gets to the drive page click the option to install drivers and point it to the USB drive.

Thanks Kent1146, also thanks to GoNz0, for your instructions and advice...

I myself found my own solution for the problem "HDD 1TB not recognised after changing SSD 32GB cache & re-installation windows 10 from scratch", as I shared in some posts above so far.

    My solution is:
    - After preparation for re-installation of windows 10 as instructions of kent1146, I just maintained the HDD 1TB plugged to the mainboard.
    - At the drive detection page (just only after you click installation - custom), I saw both SSD and HDD. I selected SSD and proceeded with windows 10 re-installation 100% as per kent1146's instructions.

Now the HDD is for data storage. The SSD Crucial 250GB M.2 2280 is for system disk.
Everything is going well and much much faster than before!

Additional infos: you may find the official instructions for re-installation of windows 10 for this specific model - Dell XPS 15 9550 - at Dell's support page, but those steps just work in case you maintain the original factory settings, meaning you don't change any hardware of the laptop.

    Good day, guys!
