So this morning, my laptop was running on battery power ( keep in mind that I live in a country where power surges and blackouts are routine).

I came to my room and decided to put in the AC adapter as the power has just came back after an hour, the moment I plugged in the adapter there was power surge as the tube light became really bright than it was before hen it got dim but I took only 3-4 seconds to plug out the charger the laptop was back on battery power, no issued there. The blue led turned off after a few seconds as it normally does when you plug out the adapter.

I kept running the laptop for like 20 minutes then I shut it down and in the evening when I tried to plug in the adapter the blue led wont come up, the laptop is still fine, running on battery but the adapter seems to be dead. Although I can hear sparks when I tried to push the plus in and out of the socket when the adapter is plugged in but no led. Laptop also does not recognize the adapter anymore.

For your note, our power went out after a short while we had to call the power company, apparently our main power cable from the supply is broken and needs to be replaced. Temporarily it is fixed by putting in a piece of cable from another cable.

I was going to buy a surge protector but couldn't find anytime as I has an interview and a test in the last week.

I think the adapter gave his life to save my laptop. I read on a forum that it could be the motherboard as dell told him the same thing after his laptop screwed up two adapters.

    Please help.

I would test out that AC adapter with a multimeter. Or you can test your XPS 15 with another Dell 90 watt AC adapter. And make sure you get a surge protector next time. ;)

ok. I ll get it checked by multimeter but what are the other options for me? New adapter costs around $50 to $80 which is too much for me since I got this laptop a month ago.
Also recommend a nice surge protector? I do know about belkin though but I dont think it ll be available here. There is a second option of getting am extension that has a fuse in it to bear the surge. My cousin has used it with his PS2 n projector. The fuse burned for like 3 times in saving his equipment from electric surge. So for him it has definately worked well. What do you say about it? It reacts on difference of 5V. Should I get it if I could not find belkin surge protector?
