I tried HP TB dock w/ XPS 13.
It does not support 4K@60Hz + 2560x1440@60Hz. Only when I select 4K@30Hz, can second display use 2560x1440 resolution.
Dell dock should be able to output to 2x 4K@60Hz, according to specs.
So returning HP..

You have to use one DP port and one USB-C to DP-adapter on the dock to get two 4K 60Hz displays, I am quite sure I read it in technical manual I have got for the docks.

Ok, that changes things
Thank you!
So this should work?

Yep, but that one seems to only do 30Hz on 4K, but that might not be a problem for you. There are lots of similar cheap adapters or you can do a single cable USB-C to DP as well. Google has one amongst other.

Can you plug in USB device that draws more than 500mA? -
Bad news. I was curious about bus powered external hard drive not working on the dock so I took out all my USB drives, total 4 of them including a Seagate 2TB USB3 drive, 2TB WD USB3 drive, 1TB WD USB3 drive, and a 1TB WD USB2 drive. None of them works! Windows will try to recognize them, a drive letter will show up in my computer but not accessible. Device Manager will try to install drivers for them. After finishing installation, the drive disappears. I used a USB meter to measure power draw, they are drawing 500mA only. I tried to Y cable to power the drives, still not working. It seems like it is able to provide enough power but somehow the drives are not recognized. I think it is software/firmware problem.
What is more interesting is that all my powered drives worked! Very strange. Does anyone know how to fix it?
I'm returning my 200W dock. -
This is driving me crazy. The external drives all worked today!! I don't know why except I have the Dell power brick plugged in. Can someone verify it? Do you have the similar behaviors?
-
OK. I'm back in town. I now have 2 dell 1080p monitors, and USB3 8 port hub, and ethernet plugged into my dock. Everything seems to be working just peachy.
I did make a power patch cable, so I have the dock power plugged into the laptop. The laptop recognizes it as a power source, but it is not allowing the dock to charge my laptop. (Any ideas on how to allow/force this?)
I am successfully running 3 monitors right now, with the 3rd plugged into my HDMI port and the laptop lid closed. Crossing my fingers . UPDATE: Something in windows is causing my HDMI attached monitor to toggle refresh rates between 59-60Hz (any way to lock this down?). UPDATE2: I don't think it's refresh rate issue, I just locked that monitor in at 60p HZ, and the monitors still go off and on occasionally. I know it's not the dock losing connection, otherwise I'd lose ethernet.
I can live with plugging in my AC adapter separately, I'll just have to purchase a separate one so I can keep one plugged in at the office.
UPDATE 3: I'm pretty sure this dock just isn't going to work. Either it suffers from overheating, like the triple-monitor Dell TB3 dock does (and is likely on recall right now), or Intel's TB3 drivers are just absolute trash, or maybe they are not working with the Integrated GPU drivers or the dGPU drivers?Last edited: Jun 10, 2016 -
I won't be using 4K external monitors any time soon, I'm thinking of simply going this route:

Works with XPS 9350 and saves quite a bit of money from the triple setup. Plus, I imagine the performance will be better using the TB3 connection vs USB 3.0.
More information from their website: http://plugable.com/products/tbt3-dp2x/Meetloaf13 likes this. -
Yeah, 3 monitor setup is what I've got, plus I need the Ethernet and a few other ports as well.
Thanks for the tip though

So I just updated my firmware with this file:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=HCC25
No screen flickering or TB3 connection drops, 45 minutes and running (that's a first). -
Jk, crap hit the fan

I had that one installed already I believe. It said it was up to date during install.
-
Anyways, thought I'd share and update. -
Glad it works for you; I'm not a fan of USB graphic cards, it will use your CPU and resouces to produce the picture signal, with possible lower image quality (maybe not visible?!); I'd rather just pass through the original signal. But I understand if your need is a 3 monitor setup yes.
-
Anyone tried the new Thunderbolt 3 drivers/firmware? I did both although I believe the firmware said I was up 2 date already, not sure.
But after installing this I belive the HP dock is more stable, I had one power flicker (which used to turn into eternal flickering) then it settled and is stable. Still early, but looks good.
Fingers crossed.
Just for the heck of it I installed USB Dock Audio and dock USB drivers mentioned in green here as well, (searched for the spxxxxxx on google). Who knows maybe it makes the audio port better or USB ports more stable, I'll try a bit.

Also funny enough in the TB staus bar settings app, under details it says "External GPUs supported: no"
Weird since other people have made it work..Last edited: Jun 30, 2016 -
As of now the HP TB3 dock has been 100% stable for me for about two weeks straight of work days. It used to sometimes do repeated power cycling, making the display flicker on and off (along with the power to the XPS), but something has fixed that.
I am not sure its something with the Anniversary update, I am suspecting a Intel 520 driver update given through Windows Update recently. Not sure. But its great now, and really clutter free.
Thinking of getting one more - or - a USB C charger (Innergie 45W) and a small USB C dock. -
I bought it because of this post and because it is the only solution I know to connect a XPS 13 to GB Ethernet, a 4K display with 60 Hz and power using a single thunderbolt cable.
However, after several days of trying I could not make it work stable.
If I connect the dock to the XPS 13 via the single thunderbolt cable
I get one of the following problems after approximately 3-5 minutes:
- the dock disconnects (sometimes ending in an endless loop of disconnecting and connecting,
sometimes ending in a bluescreen)
- the monitor goes black (and stays black)
If I additionally connect the XPS 13 to power using the XPS power supply, the dock is more stable,
however, when CPU load is high the monitor goes black.
I diligently read all the information I found on the web,
installed all relevant software updates and tried disabling the internal WLAN adapter of the XPS 13,
nothing worked so far.
My configuration details:
Hardware:
Dell XP 13 9350 with QHD display, i7-6560U CPU, 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM
Samsung U32E850R 4K-Monitor
Software:
HP Dock:
ASMedia Firmware for HP Thunderbolt Software 131025.10.11.23
Dell XPS 13:
Windows 10 V10.0.10586 Build 10586
BIOS V1.4.4
Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver 2.16.01.003, A04
Intel HD Graphics Driver V 20.19.15.4454
Any ideas what else I could try are very welcome ! -
Do you you use any insider builds? I am now on slow ring which could have updates. Also I saw a new thunderbolt driver on Dells drivers page yesterday, worth trying out.
-
I have one ordered that should arrive tomorrow (to go with my 9360 i7 and two QHD Dell monitors), but I have no TB3 cable so unless it comes with one I won't be able to try it out for another week or more until I can get one delivered. I'll give an update if I get it going. -
I received the acer graphics dock today, luckily with a cable included, and so far no problems. Once the drivers installed everything was up and running. I'm running two QHD Dell monitors from it now over DP.
I think you have to be careful not to unplug it while applications are using the GPU or it'll give a BSOD, though I have not tempted fate to try it out. (I've read that you can get around this by disabling the 960M in device manager before unplugging; once I get it up and running I'll use a script linked to a task-bar/tray icon for that, and perhaps re-enable once it detects the dock being plugged out so it's ready for the next time it's plugged in).
The fan seems to be always-on which is disappointing, though it's not terribly loud. There is power over TB3, and it does charge the laptop, but I don't think it seems to be as quick as the charger. That said, I don't see myself needing to take the charger out at the desk any more, it can stay in the bag for travel.
Finally I've found somthing that gives power, video, USB and ethernet with one cable - Awesome!
For reference, here's a passmark baseline for the system as it stands.

Thanks for your feedback, I have installed the Windows 10 anniversary update (10.0.14393 Build 14393) but don't dare to go to slow ring of the Windows insider program because I need a stable working environment
. Additionally it seemed unlikely to me that going to slow ring would solve the problem because you have been using the dock with no problems since May.
I installed the new thunderbolt driver, too, but sadly no improvement. -

Hey guys, I'm interested in this dock for my 9350, but also as a truly universal docking solution.
How big is the power adapter, as I might want to carry it around instead of a couple of dongles? Would it also be possible to attach a USB-C charger to the dock to power the laptop? According to USB-PD specs it should, I guess. I often work on 12V car plug, so this would be of great help (in combination with this: http://www.targus.com/us/usb-c-45w-dc-car-charger-apd39us).
Is there any downwards compatibility in terms of USB-C only notebooks? Charging seems to work, according to one statement here with a USB-C cable instead of TB3.
What are the alternatives? These two seem nice and compatible with MBP, which might be nice for friends that want to hook up their device.
pluggable TB3 dock
OWC TB3 dock -
Hello friends!
I have a new XPS13 and the 65w version of the HP dock. Initially it was a big disappointment as it seem to be unstable and restarting randomly (like pulling the TB3 cable). After reading the manual(!) I realized that the dock is not supposed to charge "mobile workstation". The XPS13 is quite power hungry under full load so it might be overloading the power delivery capability of the dock. Sad, but seem to be true: While connected to the docks with the TB3 cable and charging my computer with the original 45w wall charger the dock it's very stable, no problems at all.
So, I'm thinking of buying the 150w version of the dock instead and rebuild the cable to fit my XPS, but as I read earlier in this thread the computer will not charge from the docks power plug?
-
I rebuilt a cable to fit my XPS15 with the 150W dock, either my cable was faulty or the dock is chipped and wouldn't power my laptop.

Hey so things are a little confusing for me right now.
Is it possible to charge the Dell XPS 15 9560 with the 200W dock by using the Thunderbolt 3 Cable?
Or does it not work?
Best regards from Germany -
I use the 200W HP TB3 dock with my HP ZBook Studio G3, and can tell you that the HP TB3 dock drivers for Win10x64 1511 version didn't work on 1610 (Anniversary), and the 1610 drivers didn't work on 1703 (Creators). Now that MS forces Win10 versions, you will need to load the latest XPS BIOS and the HP TB3 drivers for each Win 10 version (the dock will charge, but the ports are dead after a new Win 10 version installs), along with related drivers, e.g., Intel Management Engine, Dock Audio. Updating just the TB3 driver and firmware will not work (no TB icon in the system tray) if the BIOS and ALL the supporting drivers are not up to date. The TB3 dock has tentacles everywhere.
The next Win 10 version ("Redstone 3") is now in beta, RTM late 2017, so the TB3 driver cycle will be repeated later this year.
I have an XPS 1300 9360 with an I-7 7560U, and got a TB16 installed on the first try. To install a TB16, use Dell Support Assist to update BIOS, drivers (DSA won't update any TB drivers since they shouldn't be on your XPS 13 yet), then, in this exact order:
- Install the latest Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver for the system. This is available in the "Chipset" section of Drivers & Downloads.
- Install the latest Intel Thunderbolt 3 Firmware Update for the system. This is available in the "Chipset" section.
- Install the latest Intel HD Graphics Driver for the system. This is available in the "Video" section.
- Install the latest ASMedia USB 3.0 Extended Host Controller Driver for Dell Thunderbolt Dock. This is available in the "Docks & Stands" section.
- Install the latest RealTek USB GBE Ethernet Controller Driver for Dell Thunderbolt Dock and Dell Dock. This is available in the "Docks & Stands" section.
- Install the latest RealTek USB Audio Driver for Dell Thunderbolt Dock and Dell Dock. This is available in the "Docks & Stands" section.
- Restart the system.
- After the software update process completes, connect the AC adapter to the TB16 dock first and then attach the Thunderbolt 3 (Type C) cable to the computer before using the docking station.
- A popup for a new Thunderbolt device will appear. Select "Always Connect" for both the Thunderbolt Cable and the Thunderbolt Dock. You can always navigate to the Thunderbolt device management by right-clicking the TB icon in the system tray, and selecting Manage or Approve.
The 240W AC adapter is HUGE (the same one used with my M6700 workstation, and has a DC output connector that is much larger than the power input on the XPS, IOW, the XPS AC adapter will not power the TB Dock), and the TB16 is HUGE. Definitely not designed for road warriors. In contrast, the HP AC adapter for the ZBook G3 Studio and the HP TB3 dock are small, light, works of art, and the HP AC adapter output connector fits both the notebook and the dock power input.Last edited: Jun 15, 2017 -
Why wouldnt the TB16 and 9360 work together? Have a 9560 though myself which works kind of fine with the TB16 so have not tried the 9360.

Why do TB Dock installations fail? Because the TB Dock installation depends upon having the latest BIOS and drivers, and then installing additional drivers in a prescribed order.
-
It is symptomatic that 3rd-parties are delaying release of their TB3 docks, most likely because they can't afford to sell flawed products like Dell and HP (which instead couldn't afford not to sell docks because laptop sales would suffer otherwise). -
Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C still isn't as plug and play as USB is which is a shame. Shouldn't be such a mess with drivers and firmwares etc..
For example, when I come into work and resume my laptop with a USB-C dongle in it (having not had it in at home) it usually doesn't recognize it being in and I have to unplug and plug it in to get display out etc.
