So I have an XPS M1330 with a 160GB 7200 rpm HD. I got the 64 bit Windows Vista Home Premium disc from Dell and have just one question. Will I have do do something to configure the hard drive to accept it? I read somewhere here that I might get the BSOD if the hard drive is not set correctly, am I saying that right? Hope someone can let me know about this, thanks.

As far as I know that BSOD only occurs when you want to install Windows XP.

The BSOD and windows xp only occurs if the sata drivers aren't on that particular disk version. As an example a dell sp2 xp pro disk that I was sent this year does not require any modifications.

64 Bit windows should install without any problems. There are instances where the amount of ram can cause errors but that's with specific motherboards if I remember correctly. If you have a problem installing you can always try the work around to that problem which is reducing your ram to a max of 2GB during install and then after the installation reinsert the ram.

Vista 32-Bit will BSOD with stock MSAHCI.SYS driver.
Vista 32-Bit SP1 will NOT BSOD with stock MSAHCI.SYS driver.
Vista 32-Bit + Matrix Storage Manager driver on USB stick will NOT crash.

I'm quite sure the 32-Bit source code for the MSAHCI.SYS driver is the same as for the 64-Bit version. Therefore I assume the 64-Bit version behaves the same as the 32-Bit regarding those specific BSODs. Just do the right thing when installing.

Are you telling me that dell released the xps m1330 with a oem vista 32 bit disk that will BSOD when you're installing? Or are you speaking in general that vista retail or vista that is not specifically bundled with the laptop will BSOD because it lacks the correct driver?
