Woke up this morning to find that my 1647 won't boot into the OS. I get the PXE-E61 error stating that an OS can't be found on the network so I know that the laptop is going through the boot options and ending up trying to boot from the network. I've tried switching the boot options in the BIOS to see if anything will kick in but I haven't had any luck.

My question is, what are my options with Dell if it is still under warranty? I've had the laptop for maybe four months and the HDD has already crapped out on me. Will Dell simply send me a new HDD as a fix or do I have other options?

...It's kind of sad that I'll probably get a quicker response from these forums than I will from Dell's Customer Service. ;)

I think they'ed just get an inhome technician to replace it for you.
Usually 2-3 business days after you call.

If you had important information on it, maybe they'd try to fix the hard drive itself
and give you a replacement in the mean time.

Tell then to stop sending you used drives... : )

JK.. but I would just have them send you out a new HD... and maybe request an SSD, for safety concerns of it failing again as it has no moving parts... and well because your NEW system has had 2 failing HDs.... couldn't hurt to ask.

But I would call them up and just ask for a new drive probably... good luck.

Booting Ubuntu on a CD got me into an OS and I confirmed that no HDD can be found. I can't believe that it only lasted four months before dying on me.

Has anyone had Dell recover information from the HDD for them or do they not even offer those services?

I would DEMAND it if there was sensitive info. on it.. I mean they can't just tell someone hey T.S.. right?

I already tried. The Dell rep agreed to send me a new hard drive after only a few questions. It should be here within the next couple of days.

I was actually surprised at how easy it was to get a new drive. My opinion of their customer service is improving. Now I guess I'll be mad at Seagate. ;)
