Since the SXPS 16 chipset is the PM45, I wanted to know if anyone here has tried upgrading their CPU to a quad core? I recently bought a QX9200 off ebay that I plan to put in the revised SXPS 16 when it comes out.

    Thanks.

If its supported in BIO, then it will work, but since none of us know the spec of XPS 16 refresh, we wont be able to tell until it ships.

Well even in the current SXPS 16 it should be possible. I would like confirmation from anyone that has done it though.

I put in the Q9000 but it made my normal (single threaded) apps run too slow. All other programs were blazing fast, and even windows became noticeably faster, but I want apps like Itunes and COD to work well too. So I went back to Intel 2.66

Good to hear, did the bios recognize it fine? The one I ordered is 2.4 ghz so it should work well with single threaded apps as well.

Sorry 5150, I don't think the 2.4 will work the way you want it. What is your current processor?

I'm waiting on the 4670 revision before I order again. But right now I'm using an HP DV7 with a T6400 (2.0 ghz) processor. Check out these benchmarks:

When quad core is utilized, it blows away dual core CPUs in performance. Far Cry 2 also uses it and I think so does Fallout 3. GTA IV uses 3 cores as well. More and more new games will start taking on multiple cores so I can see a big long term benefit with going quad core vs. dual core. Also, the QX9200 has 12 MB of L2 cache which will be helpful in other situations.

The QX9200 is not official, therefore it is not on intel's site.

There was someone on this site that did put in a QX9300 successfully. I was discussing it with him, and he said it was relatively painless. Obviously, more heat, but nothing extreme. Can't remember his name, though.

I think you are right, but if you read the AnandTech article about that processor, the outlook is grim. Check that out and make sure you post your results on here. I have pictures from when I installed the new processor, I can post them if you want.

I ended up not purchasing the quad core cpu. Wasn't worth the cost for me.

If the BIOS can support it it'll be great. But that would mean a more power hungry processor in the SXPS 16 if it were a quad. Depends really whether you could use the multi-threading or not.

Most apps don't use it and only games use more than 1 core, but they usually max out at 2 cores (but show 25% per core or something).

GTA4 is just not optimised, it ran like crap on the consoles too and the PS3 has 7 cores.

I'd be interested to put a high end Quad in my SXPS16 in the future but for now, it's fine. The SSD upgrade was huge tho (I put my GSkill Falcon 128GB in it).

Putting in a QUAD CPU would make a already hot running laptop hotter and that's not a good thing.
Yeah performance in gaming would be better but only in games that are QUAD optimized and there only a handful of games that are.
