Have a L501X with expiring warranty this month. Is it worth the $ to renew?

My XPS 15 warranty ends in 18 days from this post. I never had a single issue with it and I always take care it which makes me think that I prob dont need it. Dell wants $180 to extend it for a single year, to me thats steep. Had it been 2 yrs for that $180 I would do it. What im asking I guess is should I get the warranty? I havent really read any threads on here of people having hardware failures with this laptop and unless there is some kind of known problem that I do not know I cant justify spending almost $200 on it. The money is not the issue here, the issue is if its worth it.

$180 seems a lot for just 1 year, does that include accidental cover as well?

I just pulled up dell.com and on a new l502x, they are offering 3 years cover for $210 (24/7 phone support and 1-2 business day repair). Though it does always seem to be a lot cheaper if you buy the warranty at the time with the laptop.

You could try haggling with them to get a better deal if you want to extend the cover, or just save that $180 for a new laptop in the future. If they aren't willing to offer you a better deal I would just leave it, it's only 1 years cover - would you pay another $180 at the end of that year to extend again? You'd then be at almost $400 which could have been put towards a new machine.

Is the 180 just depot repair? I don't think you can extend CC unless your unit already had CC (if I'm wrong, somebody correct me). If it was on-site perhaps worth it.

It does not include accidental. Its 1yr w/ next day onsite after remote diagnosis. $180 seems like alot for 1yr. I dont even need them to come here, if it was 2-3 yrs for that price i wouldnt mind sending it out if I ever needed a repair

Well have you tried calling them up? Sometimes you can get a better rate haggling with a sales rep over the phone. 180 is a bit steep for on-site + 1 year extension.

A bit pricey. I decided not to extend cause Dell wanted to charge me £130 for a year or £300 for three years and that is not including accidental cover.

I'm in the same boat as you. BUT! I just experienced problems with my audio and I've had two technicians in my home working a couple hours each to try and solve the problems. So far two new mother boards and a set of brand new speakers.. all at no cost to me. I just renewed my warranty for another year.

Think of it as insurance and not warranty coverage. If Dell proclaims they make quality products, why do they push the $$ warranty coverage? Because that's where they make the money.
Buying a warranty (extended or whatever) is a gamble. What are the odds? If you can "afford" something unexpected happening to your laptop, don't get it. If you want peace of mind and for the "off-chance" of something failing, buy it.

Why does warranty exist? To cover functional failures, simply put. But the manufacturer's standard warranty covers the whole wide spectrum of failures, minus physical damage/customer induced damage.

What are the odds? Given how poor the XPS track record has been, I think a warranty is a wise investment. Going back to the Pentium 4 Mobile days, they have always had overheating/throttling issues.

I also know 1 guy who has been through so many XPS laptops, it's not funny. He went from XPS M1210 in 2006 (defective Nvidia chip) to XPS M1330 (defective Nvidia chip) to Studio XPS 1340 (throttling ATI card) to now XPS 14 which still has issues, so tell me why wouldn't an extension of the manufacturer warranty be a smart move? He paid a total of 350 for a 4 year warranty originally on the M1210, I'd say it's a well worth investment.

True. That's why initial warranties exist. Do you think there is a reason why one gets reminders/Emails/phone calls asking if you want to extend the warranty? It's because they, being Dell in this case, will bring in far greater money than they will pay out in repairs, etc....
There will always be someone that benefits from an extended warranty. One has to weigh the price vs the value you receive. If what you want is "peace of mind," it's worth it.

Well warranties is all about the numbers game. They think they can make money, which most of the times they do. But some computers are so problematic, they just buy it out, hence why the warranty is worth extending.

Honestly I've never had a computer really fail on me in warranty, but for me warranty is important in big ticket items when repairs can be hundreds of dollars, vs extending the warranty for half that cost and having another 1/2/3/4 years.

I figure i can fix my own laptops so the costs of parts vs Cost of Warranty is what I look at
