    Hi all,

I am thinking about buying a studio XPS 1340. The only thing holding me back is the heating issue. If the heating only comes from intense use of the graphics card (ie gaming) then that's not too much of an issue for me. If there isn't a lot of heat generated from web/email, watching videos and running applications, then I think I'd be ok with it. Can anyone who has purchased the 1340 comment on this please?

I was thinking I would test it out for heat and if it was too hot then send it back.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

It's not that hot unless the dedicated GPU is getting used (3D intensive work like gaming).

When you're not flexing the graphic muscles (especially when you get it to battery saver or dell recommended mode) the thing runs very cool and almost silently.

When you're doing very light work you'll actually hear the hard drive more than the fans.

But this one isn't about cooling it's about heating. Personally I use gas for heating my 1340 but I've heard of people using bar heaters.

Seriously though, the heat is usually fine except on your lap, in which case you should put it in power saver to turn off the second graphics card, and it doesn't get too hot. It does run hotter than some other laptops but not to the point of actually overheating. Possibly only if the thermal paste was applied badly by Dell, which it sometimes can be, but you should be fine. JMoose says it more succinctly than me.
