    Hello all,
I've had this happen to me two times in the past two days on a month old machine. I'll be surfing the net, then i'll hear what sounds like very brief HD thrashing (but a bit louder than normal thrashing sounds) for a few moments, then there'll be rapid beeping sounds and my laptop will freeze. At this point i'll have to hard shut down this thing and restart.

    Any ideas out there?

Bad hard drive? Run some sort of disk checker and see if it turns up anything.

Yeah, this has happened to me as well, if you remove the battery and hold the power button for a few seconds it will powercycle to pc, usually fixes it. This is a known problem on some studio xps 13/16. I reccomend contacting dell for a replacement.

Before contacting Dell and trying to deal with their customer service, I've just tried getting some diagnostic utilities for this hard drive. I checked the device manager, found the model number for my hard drive to be a ST950032 5AS, googled and found it to be a seagate drive, then downloaded SeaTools for Windows. It can't find any supported hardware when scanning for supported drives!? Am I doing something wrong here? I can't find any info on this hard drive on Dell's site. They only list firmware for samsung drives.

Which storage driver are you using? Are you using the MS driver, or the nVidia storage driver? The nVidia driver will not pass through S.M.A.R.T. data to the OS, which is kind of lame. I can't get drive temps via SATA/eSATA unless I go back to the MS driver.
