Did you get it from Steam? I had the same problem. The solution is to make a shortcut to the "LaunchGTAIV.exe" file and paste it on your desktop. Then right-click->properties-> add -no restrictions at the end of the line in the Target box and you should be OK, e.g. "C:\Program files\GTAIV\LaunchGTAIV.exe" - no restrictions . Of course, the path to the launcher will vary according to your installation and will be automatically filled in when you make the short-cut. This should allow you to pick any settings and bypass the integrated restrictions check.

he was giving you an example... if you downloaded from steam your game exe will be something like c:/program files(x86)/steam/steamapps/common/gta4 (am just guessing)

    go investigating :p

The game might not be triggering the nVidia GPU so you may be running it on the Intel HD 3000 graphics. Try looking for the main executable file and manually add that to use nVidia graphics.

Techodac, are you sure you are using the correct file path? Easiest way is to find "LaunchGTAIV.exe" (you could use the search function in windows if you aren't sure where it is). When you find it ->right click->create shortcut and then paste it somewhere else, e.g. desktop. Then just add the line i mentioned in my first post. You could try either - no restrictions or - norestrictions, as i am not a 100% which one i used and my laptop is not here to check. I'd also recommend visiting the steam/official GTAIV forums - i remember that that is where i found the solution. Good luck!

You should also pay attention to the amount of video card memory detected and displayed in the graphic options menu - this will indicate if the correct GPU is engaged - 2048MB is the number you are looking for. It means the game is using the GT540.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I am under the impression that GTAIV plays horribly on PC platform? I heard that they did a horrid job at porting from console and as a result, even top spec pc's have a hard time maintaining decent frame rates.

There were some technical problems when the game was initially released but they have been largely sorted out with patches. Though it still a demanding game it is very playable on my L702x, not to mention current high-end PCs.

Have you added the exe in the nvidia control panel and set it to run with the nvidia card. Get rid of that 3rd party patch for now then see if it works.
