Hello, I just bought a XPS 1530 and Im looking for a few opinions on keeping it running cool.
1. What fan controller software should I use for the 1530?
2. Is it possible to replace the stock GPU fan with an aftermarket one? If so is there a guide on that.
3. Similar to question #2 is there a guide on replacing the thermal paste on the 1530 with a 8600m GT GPU?
4. Whats the best laptop cooler for the 1530 that lines up to the fans underneath.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

1. SpeedFan
2. not sure
3. not sure
4. I use Targus Chill Mat. Works great. Inexpensive. Lightweight, and quiet. -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
1. SpeedFan or BIOS A09
2. No it is not.
3. There is no guide, but its simple...
Open up the back remove the fan and the dissipator, they have little square-rectangel like things at its ends...
clean up the thermal paste, and apply new one over the CPU/GPU
4.- dunno,i dont have one but probably zalman nc1000? -
BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
by the way this is teh fan and dissipator:
the gray stuff is dried thermal paste, you must clean that.
and apply it ON the chips, NOT the dissipator
or w/e.

Bios A09 and speedfan do not allow user to alter fan speed, nor do they give control.
As far as I've read fan speed (software) controllers don't work on the 1530.
Though could be wrong - I don't use such programs.
As regards Speedfan you'll have to get the beta version to read the 8600 gt.
One question, if you've just bought it, why are you looking to do such serious alterations?
1.?????
2. Nope Problem with 1530 is Nvidia's faulty soldering and there's nothing you cando about it.
3. If you've just bought, as in its still in warranty - replacing the paste will void the warranty, if you have to send it in to be fixed or replaced. So you might want to think about that.
4. A lot of people seem to have zalmans (1000 or 2000)
I haven't seen any (specifically designed for) type coolers, so I suppose it depends on how much you wan't to spend. -
Get a Zalman NC2000..... its been great for me.
* And if you wish, you could do a simple trick proposed by GOPHN to get the max out of the cooler..

Dude I got this Cheap one from E-Bay
It has 3 Fans with Blue LED's
Came up to like 15 bux shipped....I use it ALL the time had it for a couple of months constantly on (with the computer on)

I know it sounds like a cheap knock off (which it probably is LOL)
But it works really good dude and for that price shoooottt

Thanks for all the advice! I'm going to order some thermal paste and a Zalman NC2000 this week.
-
remember > removing/messing with the oem thermal paste will void the warranty, AFAIK!! So be prepared for that...
-
What is this simple trick you speak of?
-
yomamasfavourite. How did you get such high OC speeds on your 8600m GT 256mb ?
-
What is the trick? I haven't gotten a cooler yet, but the Zalman would be my choice.
You can use I8kfangui to bump up the notebook fan speed. -

I just use rivatuner, though I suppose I should change down the mem clock,
I decided to run 3dmark (I've just been playing games as a benchmark before - No artifacts = good to go) but 3dmark started to artifact on full mem clock so - So i've since clocked down to 950 mem (especially since there's no memory temperature sensor - I'd rather not fry it)- sig changed.
I don't know if the card can go any higher or not - rivatuner only gives the option of what I've it set at. -
Though its not that one *needs* to do this simple trick... for me, the Zalman NC2000 has been working well just like that.. but this trick would sure help
-
all the questions have been answered already, but do not disassemble the heat sinks and fan assembly. removin the thermal paste will void yur warranty. just download a temp monitorin program (2+ different programs would be good too) and monitor yur temps closely. if there is a thermal problem just get the whole motherboard replaced. if this is a new m1530 then it should come with the A09 bios.
as far as coolers...its a very controversial topic. the best, available, cooler for gaming/"power notebooks" is the cryo LX. hands down. -
Oh yeah.. thats so true and I mentioned it already.. but good that u said it again .. recently I am seeing more # of people wanting to replace the thermal paste, without actually knowing this warranty voiding issue.. Anyways, I wish / hope people are aware of this before messing around with the laptop.
And yeah, though I have the zalman, I have read good things about the Cryo LX too
-
what i'm more interested in is the new m1530's comin with newer heat sink designs. but yea, i have noticed alot of people wantin to take apart their heat assemblies lately.
don't shoot yurself in the foot guys. shoot dell in their feet and let them deal with it.
don't get me wrong on the nc1000/2000. they are great products if u are lookin for a quiet cooler that will provide general cooling. but it just simply cannot perform as well on gaming, "power notebooks", or hardcore setups. it's versatility falls short when compared to the cryo LX. -
Yeah probably and thats what I read too, about the cryo lx and the reviews on it... anyways, for now I am just good with the zalman
and I don't do hardcore gaming anyways...

i might be getting a 13-14 incher for downstairs use. i need one downstairs to monitor all my fantasy scores and sports info
if i do happen to get a 13" - 14" tho, i will definitely get a nc1000 for it.
just try to do a bit of researchin and look for a cooler that will fit yur needs/wants.
Help with keeping the XPS 1530 cool.
