I just got my new Studio XPS 1640 in the mail today and got a little excited. I started tweaking stuff galore, following the variety of vista tweaking thread for reducing boot time, speeding up your comp etc... but I think I must have screwed something up because the computer started lagging like crazy. i couldn't even navigate in "My Computer"

So me, being all excited and dumb decided that I would reinstall Vista and partition my C drive (which is a 256gb SSD btw, if that's important), instead of learning about the Factory Image Restore.

So now my screen resolution sucks, and I'm frustrated and tired of trying to fix this. I just want it back to how it was before, fresh out of the box. :( I have the Vista CD and The Driver CD, and I tried installing every damned driver and application and whatever, but it's never the same as it came out of the box.

I can't find the webcam or facial recognition software anywhere and I'm missing the cool dock at the top and bleh. I'll stop ranting, but if anyone. ANYONE, knows how to help me I would greatly appreciate it. I just want the good laptop that I paid 2000$ for. :(

    Thanks in advance

You can get the dock program at http://www.delldock.com/

The webcam program should be on a separate disk called Dell Webcam Central, not on the drivers and utilities disk.

For the screen resolution, you'll to install the right display driver and then adjust the resolution in display settings after rebooting.

Rather than using the outdated drivers on that disk, go to support.dell.com, in the drivers and downloads section, and get the latest drivers for the Studio XPS 1640.

    Thank you so much!

Do you know where I can get the webcam disk? Would I have to order it from the website?

Also, how do I know which drivers I should download?

the webcam disk should be in the box that your laptop came in. you shouldn't have to order it unless they forgot to give it to you. it clearly says webcam software on the disc.

go to dell.com/support and type in your service tag number. you should be able to find the software downloads page for the 1640. you'll need to look at the software to sift through what you want and don't want to put on there but everything that they put on from the factory is there.

Yikes. I have no webcam software disc. :(

Are there any drivers considered "useless" or that I shouldn't bother downloading? It just seems like a lot of unnecessary clutter and I'm not really sure as to what each driver does, and it doesn't offer alot of description on the site.

    Thanks for your help!

There is no restore to original factory conditions option?

It dissapeared after I re-installed Vista.

Does anyone know if I can download the webcam software online (Just the regular software where I can take picture with my built in webcam)? As well as the facial recognition software?

    Thank you so much!!

Everything's almost back to normal. I installed all the drivers and everything works fine, and the facial recognition software you provided worked!

The only left is the webcam software. I downloaded the driver but I still can't find any trace of the webcam software. If someone could help with this last little problem, I would really appreciate it.

Just call Dell and ask them to send you the disk, since it wasn't packaged in your system. If you're lucky, they'll overnight the disk, but worst case you'll wait 3 to 5 days.

Okay, the only problem now besides the webcam software(which I will call them about), is the touch eject button. It doesn't seem to be working. I always have to manually right click the Disk Drive and select "eject"

Sorry for all the problems guys. :(

Same for me. But ehh that doesn't really bother me. Well, maybe I'll ask the tech that is replacing my lid to fix that? Yeah.. Webcam software go to:
    downloadstore.dell.com/media

and sign up then you will have Roxio Creator, webcam software, and Facial Recognition to download 3 times each. Also install Manycam webcam software if that doesn't work and make sure you have your webcam drivers in order.

It would be wise of you to get win7 RC instead of wasting time with vista, but its all up to you.
