Firstly, as we all know, Nvidia 8 series card are defected cuz of the soldering material, mine 1 is functioning well but i would want a replacement just in case, but the dell support wont let me do this, anyone knows how to get the replacements although the card is functioning well. I was thinking of cheating the dell support, what i know is the vertical lines only, would the dell support asks for diagnostic check?

anyone who had replaced their GPU pls share their experience, thx.

Secondly, the Nvidia 8series card going defect is not 100%, when it is overheated, it would only spoil the card. That day i asked dell support wether the replacement for GPU card is new, or dell just take 1 of the card from those defects(though not 100%) 1 and replace it for us, and hoping it wont get spoilt.

Anyone who has an idea about this please share.

    Many Thanks Beforehand.

They aren't going to give you one to keep on hand just in case your video card fails. If it does fail, then they will send you one. They work on a "receive new part, send in bad part" type deal. They will more than likely ask for the diagnostics results.

As far as I'm aware even the new ones sold, as in right this min, have the defective soldering problem (dell has a stockpile of them) so what would be the point of sending one with a problem in, to get a new one with the exact same problem?

If you're that worried about it get the warranty extended.

You can do what I did... I wrote a letter to Dell. In business, you can only come out ahead when you make a fair offer. Since it is very possible you can own this laptop for years beyond the warranty period and it will not fail, it is not fair for you to request a replacement GPU.

I made them an offer and they accepted. I told them I travel a lot, and I indulge in gaming in hotel rooms across the world. I simply cannot afford my gaming at night to cause my laptop to fail for the next morning at an important meeting. So I offered for them to allow me to open up the system, apply a better thermal compound and a copper modification to help with over heating. If they do not like this, they can replace my GPU instead. I explained that if the system failed because I was incapable of performing the modification I would not hold Dell responsible but if the temperatures were lowered as a result of my actions and the GPU failed at a later date they would be responsible for a period of 1 (one) year beyond the date of warranty.

Here, both parties took some risk and in my opinion Dell comes out ahead. They don't have to waste money on fixing my issue but if it fails they agree to replace it no questions asked. I addressed it to the President. They wanted me to go through a whole bunch of steps and try certain drivers, I explained that I had sent the terms of the contract, they can now accept or reject it and they accepted.

My GPU now runs almost 20 degrees cooler. I'm confident that it will last me 2 years, and if not I have the re-assurance that Dell will replace it. It helps to get clear on what you want the outcome to be and then ask for their cooperation to meet your needs. Just remember to be fair, asking for a replacement "in case" of failure is not fair, but getting it in writing that they will replace your GPU in 48 hours upon failure, that is completely fair ;)

I hope you don't mind me asking but what copper mod did you do?
I opened mine recently and it seems as far as i could see without removing the compund that the entire heatsink/heatpipe/(cpu/gpu/northbridge)connectors were all make from solid coppor (as opposed to the brushed alloy some older 1530's have)

I know in the 1330 there's a thick pad between the gpu and the heatsink, hence the need to replace it with copper sheet, but I wasn't aware there was one in the 1530, is there?

So are we getting new GPU for replacement, or dell just give a functioning affected GPU ?

My 1530 doesn't have a thick pad. There's a pad on the chipset but I've never touched it. The mod I did is my sig.. and most of the info I got was in that thread. It's straightforward. You just need to get a thin piece of copper and make sure you sand down the impurities.. or just follow the directions from the thread, the guy did a nice writeup.

Yes I got the green light. I know how to write contracts so I made them offer, allow me to what is best for my laptop or else replace it now. I'm not up for this wait and see approach they wanted to do. I sent them screenshots of the temps, my GPU wasn't going to last long if something wasn't done.

I'm not sure what pictures I posted.. my GPU temps actually continued to go down after I did the mod. I wrote those messages about an hour after I did it. I idle in the 55-59 range now and max temp under full load is 77. COD4 is usually 70-72, GRID bumps it a little higher. It's never reached 80 since I've done the mod.

    jb1007,

dude, u copper-modded your GPU only, im thinking of copper-modding my processor chip and the system board chip as well, it's all 3 chips to be copper-modded, then there should be a great drop in temperature, but im worry bout the heat conduction of the pipe, cuz heat conduction of copper-modded-gpu as compared to all-3-chips being copper-modded is much much better.

    comments ?

    to notebookreview folks,

    1. Has Nvidia resolve the issues with the 8series card? or Nvidia just wait for the card to spoilt then only they replace it? (Currently Nvidia CEO and CFO are being sued of this fraud)

    2. (For XPS m1530, 8600gt) The replacement for this GPU, izzit the newly revised 1 or the old functioning defective card? (sorry to bring this question up again, cuz i dont see a clear answer for it)

    3. (For XPS m1530, 8600gt) are there going to be any newly revised GPU replacement that going to be made? (this question is only valid if the answer for the 2nd question is a negative)

please kindly answer the above questions in orderly manner, clear answers and thoughts are most appreciated.

    many thx
