Hey all,
It seems my idle GPU temps are pretty high. I just embarked on a mission to clean my fan out. I believe I was successful, but the whole thing was a little out of my comfort zone.
I'm now experiencing slightly cooler GPU temps i think (around 42-46 C at idle) but the GPU temp at idle is at a very steady 68 - 69 C, and the fan just keeps running all the time. Maybe I should have paid more attention to what the temps were beforehand, but it's too late for that.
Was wondering if this was something to be concerned about. Do I possibly have a bad contact between the thermal system and the GPU, and should I try and connect it more securely? If so, how do I do this?
Thanks,
Sheen

What GPU do you have on your 1530??

That said, GPU idle temps in the 60's are not dangerous, but slightly on the warm side. The only temperatures that really matter are the ones you get under full load. -
Don't worry about a copper mods unless you're overlocking your GPU. Try updating your VGA drivers and/or replacing your thermal paste with AS5.

That's what that great XPS Tech Support is for!
You also have that extra one year warranty on the GPU if it is one that is covered by by the Nvidia issue:

Yeah I have the 8600M GT. I'm not overclocking so I'm not going to worry about copper mods as I'd really prefer not to void the warranty. I guess I will talk to Dell if it doesn't get any better.
I just wasn't sure if this was a sign of a bad contact between the thermal stuff and the GPU. Eh...

Firstly - Copper mod is only for the 1330. Thermal paste is used on the 1530 not a thermal pad - hence no need for a copper sheet to fill the gap.
Secondly Mid 60's for an 8600m gt in a 1530 is not that bad.
The lowest that it will ever go (temp wise) is mid 50's, so stop worrying.
Especicially considering some 1530's are running a lot hotter than yours, anything up to over 100!
More importantly what is your max temperature under loading?
This is where you know whether you should be getting worried or not.
If you you're not happy with your laptop you should get on to Dell, but you should take into account that after the replacement you could be even worse off with a laptop that runs even hotter (as has been the case for many NBR members). -
Yea, your temps really aren't that bad. Just clean out your fan vents with some canned air. The temps are about what most ppl are running with their m1530's though.
-
yea try cleaning those vents and get artic silver-5 and apply it to thecpu and the gpu. Before cleaning vent and applying AS-5, my idle temp was almost close to 70 and reaching 90~92 with heavy gaming.
But once i clean the vent and applied the thermal paste, my idle temp is around 60 and reaching 80~84 with heavy gaming.
So try those out -
Finally tested the max of the GPU a little today. I turned on Civ 4 and played for about 10 min. with my hardware monitor running in the background. With about 10 min. of play it got up to max temps of 97 C. At the same time I got CPU temps of 95 C. Didn't have it undervolted as normal b/c I've been getting the occasional blue screen lately and I'm not sure why.

Cpu temps that high, means somethings wrong and it needs to be fixed.
