    Hi,
When the laptop is under video stress there is a loud high pitch buzzing sound coming from the back left of the laptop(GPU?) Is this normal or did i get a dud?

    I have a 8800gtx SLI setup.

    Cheers,
    Nick

Could you record it and post it on youtube or somewhere?

Its not related to the lights either.
    Should i just contact Dell?

Contact Dell if you cannot record it,it's not a normal use, I've listened to a few XPS1730s and none exhibit any high pitch noise...

does this happen even if the battery is fully charged? I know if I've been mobile and the battery is somewhat depleted and I go back to AC power, there is a whine while the battery is charging. As soon as the battery reaches 95% or so the whine will stop.

All of the video cards I've listened to make noises during games. In most cases, the noise is proportional to how many frames per second the video card is pumping out. It's especially bad when I play one of my old games, Starsiege: Tribes. I've heard these noises coming from a GeForce 6800 (desktop card), 6800 Ultra Go (XPS Gen 2), 7800 GTX Go (XPS Gen 2), 7950 GTX Go (friend's M1710), 8700m GT SLI (M1730), and 8800m GTX (M1730). I've had lots of video cards before these and it seems like GeForce 6 series and later do it.

Also, with the M1730 I've noticed that the graphics card fans (back left in the chassis) make a high-pitched noise while powering the fans. The sound goes away if the CPU fan turns on, the graphics card fans speed up past the lowest speed, or the graphics card fans turn off. This is true for the 8700m GT SLI and the 8800m.

My advice: don't sweat it. Some people notice it, others don't. It's just the sounds of the laptop doing its thing.

    dude
your beast is probably just dusty. If you follow the GPU removal guides found on Youtube for the M1730 pull out your video card and give it a good blow with air spray.

Its probably clogged. mine was after a few months.

    Hi,
    Thanks everyone for their replies.
Dell left it up to me if i wanted a new card or not but i decided to leave it, if it starts annoying me too much ill get it replaced.

    Its only 2 days old.

    Cheers,
    Nick

Dell are sending out replacement parts and a tech.
Will they send the gpu and heatsink in one unit or will i only get a gpu? if thats the case i will only have half the thermal paste. Will as5 be fine for the gpu?
    Cheers

I didn`t use any thermal paste for the GPU as whatever is on is fine.
Max temps 75-76C for the GPU, regardless of the game. I`m super happy with it , since I cleaned the fans not long ago and it made a world of a difference.

The GPU and its heatsink are one unit. No need for thermal paste or anything.
