burn the .ISO file to a DVD, make sure you've got a free 20-25Gb partition, and then restart your notebook and boot from the disc drive. and then go through the install process.

My XPS 1330 is not my primary computer, initially I thought of installing Vista 64 bit but then I thought of Windows 7.

Windows update should find most of the drivers for your notebook.

Installed it today to test, and everything on my M1330 is working, except for the fingerprint reader. I needed the NVidia drivers, which were listed on Windows update.

tried... set the OS to Windows 2008(64bit) or Vista(64bit)... the installer screen would load, then say Attemping to load a 64-bit application, but this CPU is not compatible in 64-bit mode

no idea why... VT-X was enabled

    same deal with VMware

I like it so far. Much quicker boot (around 15-20 secs), and the OS seems much faster in general. Haven't yet installed any apps except Firefox and HWMonitor, to verify the claim I've seen made that temps are lower. And they are: mine were (with the Nvidia GPU and copper mod) 50 (CPU) and 65 (GPU) on idle, and are now 40 and 60.

The only thing that's stopping me from using this as my primary OS is the lack of fingerprint reader support, as I've gotten lazy in terms of typing in passwords for websites and logging on to the laptop itself. And of course the possibility that some apps I use won't work (but that's untested right now).

Edit: forgot to mention that I've getting a disk score of 3 with Windows experience (320GB 7200RPM), whereas that score was over 5 in Vista64 (am using 64bit Win7 too). Others have tried the AHCI drivers from both Intel and Dell with no joy, so I don't know if there's a fix for this yet.

Just re-installed using the Intel AHCI drivers (as per the old F6 method) - disk score still 3. In more promising news, UPEK have now released a compatible Protector Suite, which is working fine for windows logon, as well as in Firefox.

I tried that, twice now!, and didn't work
I know some people managed to get AHCI working but i think they didn't install the 64X.

Do you mean the fingerprint reader, or AHCI? If the former, I downloaded and installed the full Protector Suite, rather than just the driver - perhaps that's the problem in your case?

Other things I've now tried and verified as working:
    Office 2007
Nokia PC Suite & sync with Outlook via bluetooth
    Card reader
HDMI output to TV and external monitor(HDMI sound output works too)

Did a clean install with Bios A15.

AHCI problem here too. Dell Vista x64 Intel Matrix Manager driver did nothing. Other forums state that AHCI wasn't supported a couple of builds ago on W7 x64. Maybe it still isn't fully. BTW, I'm using a Fujitsu 160 GB SATA.

To get the touchpad scrolling to work, download the Vista x64 tp driver from synaptics.com

To get sound to work, download the Vista sound driver from dell.com

Odd - touchpad scrolling and sound worked for me without those drivers. Are you using build 7000?

Yup, Build 7000. Its probably due to the config flavor of my M1330 (bluetooth, 8400 gpu, led, camera, no cellular, etc). The standard drivers probably conflicted with something...

Of note, hwmonitor reports the same temps as in Vista. Read something somewhere about someone getting lower temps in Windows 7. Probably depends on the GPU drivers you're comparing, but for me, its the exact same.

I'm getting lower CPU temps (T9300) - between 7-10 degrees. Initially I thought the GPU was lower too (using the nvidia drivers from Windows Update), but that's looking questionable now.

    Hi,
I had the same problem with the experience rating being 3.0 due to the HDD.
I flashed the bios to A15 and now the hdd rating is 5.2. The overall rating is 4.1, coming from the graphics.
    Hope this works for you.

Thanks, but that's not going to help in my case - I installed with A15 as my bios the first time around.

regarding the temps, its rather simple, open our task manager, you will notice that in vista you were always using 2-7% of your cpu when idle, when in windows 7, you only use 0-1% of your cpu, so that little difference in cpu temp is because the cpu is at 0 usage almost all the time, and the gpu is really only used when gaming so temperatures on idle should be the same.

What did you do with the bluetooth driver? The Dell driver says it can only install on vista, and compatibility mode doesn't help.
    Otherwise, everything else works.

Microsoft seem to have solved it for me - am now running the 64bit RC, which I installed without those drivers, and my disk score is 5.6.

Hi! I have the same problem with the bluetooth driver. Has anyone solved it already? I contacted Dell and they said they only provided support for the original OS...

    Thanks.

I had been googling to solve this problem and I found this post, so I thought this was the only post on this forum about it!
Hehehe. You were right, I tried to search inside the forum and I found the answer. It is here (link from one post):

    http://codereflect.com/2009/01/17/w...oth-device-after-re-installing-windows-vista/

    It worked perfectly.

Now, my little problem is that I have an unknown device inside "Other Devices" called "System Base Device" (I'm translating from Spanish, so maybe it has a different name), which I thought it was the Bluetooth...
    I'll try searchig for this.
Anyway, thanks a lot for solving my Bluetooth problem.

PS: Right now, the link is not working, so here is the direct link to dell:

I'm here again to post the solution to my "unknown device". It was the Ricoh driver. I found the info here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=431552

    And the suitable driver here:

    http://support.us.dell.com/support/...typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=336870

Hope it helps other people with the same problem :) .
