Just wondering if everyone else's slot loading drive vibrates the entire machine when in use as well? It's much more noticeable than my old laptop and Im worried the vibrations might damage the hard drive over the long term. Thoughts?

Seems no worse than any other slot load drive I've had. If you have your hands on it, it is what I consider normal vibration.

If my laptop isn't parallel to the ground, it vibrates pretty bad in usage.

Mine is very bad, I'm going to have it replaced when I have some free time. I just never use it.

Mine sounds like a prop plane taking off. People around me stare and exclaim 'what's wrong with that laptop?' I wonder if some think it has a bomb in it. It's awful!

I've just got the normal dvd-rw and I've just burnt the recovery dvd's and didn't notice much noise or any vibrations.

Lol agree ^^^ only mine sounds like a helicopter taking off, the trees in my neighborhood start moving from the vibrations, pavement starts cracking, I would say its really bad, and my friends did look at me with laughter in their eyes when they heard the dvd drive run.. for a portable 13 inch laptop xps1340 sure has a LOOOUD optical drive... I just laugh everytime I pop a dvd in, it doesnt bother me, just cracks me up :)

I don't know, mine really isn't bad. If you want loud you should hear the optical on my brother's macbook spin up. You'd think a helicopter was buzzing the roof!

thats strange.. I owned white macbook 13inch (not the new unibody) and to me the macs optical drive was a lil quieter than the one I have in xps 1340... but maybe results differ alil from xps1640's more solid weight and size

I have what sounds like a normal spin, but I don't have physical "vibrations" from the drive when I use it...

EDIT: I noticed there is very subtle "rumble" that is felt when I put my palms on the keyboard to use while the disc is spinning, but I've had that happen before with my other laptop, and it seems normal to me. It's certainly not an ostensibly audible vibration or schreeching.
