How badly could my laptop have been damaged?

As common knowledge goes, laptops should go into sleep mode when you close the screen. However, my laptop did not go into sleep mode when I closed the lid, and I put it into my laptop bag, assuming it was in sleep mode. After about 1.5 hours, I took it out of the bag and it was really hot. So far, the performance of the laptop seems to be normal, but I was wondering if there is anything I should still be concerned about. Are there any methods/programs that would thoroughly diagnose the hardware?

It was hot because the bag insulated the notebook and most probably blocked the vents. The only part you shoulf be worried about is the hard drive.

Download HDTune and do a full disk check. Hopefully your HD automatically parked the heads.

You should set your notebook to automatically sleep after 10mins (on battery mode only)

Ya. Hard drives usually die at around 60 to 65 C so just be careful with it. Dont be like a guy on another forum who put it in the freezer thinking it would help.

Same thing happened to me. Man that thing was hot. Ran diagnostics on my HDD and everything seems okay.

Your laptop should be fine. For me, my laptop was turned on in my backpack for longer than 4 hours. Lately, laptops are getting more reliable so it should be okay. Just be careful next time.
