How black are the blacks on the RGBLED?

I'm looking for a glossy, bright, rich color screen that has really, really deep blacks. There were some comments in the RGBLED settings thread that the blacks don't get very black on this screen. Is that true? Would a white LED screen have better blacks? I don't care about photo work, I just want the best looking screen for games and movies.

Blacks are not good, even if you turn the brightness down. It is the one area which is not great on this screen. However it is quite surprising how little I notice the poor blacks and I watch lots of movies and TV and play lots of dark games.

IMHO the amazingly bright and vibrant colours are definitely worth the compromise on blacks.

Blacks are not good. Hmmm...compared to what? Would a white LED have deeper blacks? What type of screen has better blacks?

The best screen I have seen so far, in person, is the glossy Sony X-Brite HiColor 1920x1200 (not to be confused with the X-Brite "FullHD" 1920x1080 that has an anti-reflective coating).

I find the blacks to be great for gaming and movies. The RGBLED is an awesome screen

very good.(when i compare my former Vaio X-Black wuxga-screen...my RGB SEC5448 looks superior in all ways.

here how it looks taken with a smaller Canon digi cam,
(look at the Black surface on the image. also notice there is no light-bleeding from the bottom....the quality is really mind blowing :)):

Well it is LED backlit so it would kinda make sense seeing as there is no need for a traditional diffuser

Compared to my old Gateway P-6860 FX, Sony HS60 projector, Samsung A650 LCD, JVC HD100 projector. AV is my hobby and this screen has the worst blacks I've seen for a while. Both of my RGBLED screens (as I have had one replaced due to flickering on battery) have also had quite bad clouding.

However as I said the colours, brightness and pop easily make up for it. How often do you see a near total black screen on a laptop? Usually only in movies and in that situation you will notice the poor blacks. However that is the only occasion. What I am really hoping and waiting for is an LED local dimming display in a laptop. That will be sweet. Or OLED of course.

???? looks you have a bad screen or whatever.

when i look on movies, for example night scenes, it looks just awesome, also in games when its night scenes it looks awesome.

my first RGB screen was good, but not as good as my newest. (this screen is about 3-4 weeks old for the record and the quality is the best ive ever had)

    my older laptops are:

    Black custom 9400 wxga+ True life LG-Philips 17"
    Vaio VGN-AR51J wxga+ X-Black 17"
Amilo m4438g wuxga Ultra sharp 17"

    (plus 2 pieces of Acer)

Sorry KSMB but I take whatever you say with a pinch of salt, especially after the BIOS upgrade / white balance rubbish. As I said I'm heavily into AV and this screen is simply not good with black levels. I suspect you just don't know what good blacks are actually like and thus you have nothing to compare to. Also the photos that you posted are absolutely useless for proving black levels.

well, im VERY satisfied with my new RGB-screen. it knock my X-Black back to Korea (or whatever it comes from).

feel kind of sorry for you....you buy a $1500 laptop with the best screen on the market and you get such a weak screen-quality.....must be really irritating

Would you mind taking a picture of your XPS 16 screen with an all black screen? Preferably with no lights on?

That would give us a good idea of the black level, bleeding/clouding/mura...

I'm currently using a Macbook Pro (mid-June refresh) which has pretty inky blacks...I get the feeling the XPS 16 will disappoint. Have you seen the new MBPs and, if so, how do you feel the 16 compares?

A friend of mine has a MBP 15 about 1 month old and he practically drools over my screen.
