    Hi guys,

The motherboard on my XPS M1330 needs replacing for the second time. First time it was replaced under warranty, but my system is now out of warranty so I'm going to replace it myself.

I phoned Dell and they're charging €400 for a replacement but I can get it cheaper if I knew the Dell part number. I have the NVIDIA 8400M GS.

From doing some research, here are some part numbers for motherboards for XPS M1330's:

    PU073
    GM848
    CX062
    D057F
    K984J

How can I check my existing motherboard's part number to ensure I order the correct part?

    Many thanks,
    Richard

The specific model of the board doesn't really matter. Just make sure you get an M1330 with a discrete GPU and you should be fine. Heck, you could even get the IGP board if you don't want to roll the dice with another Nvidia GPU; they'll all fit in the same chassis.

The only thing I'd actually watch for is the power connector. Some M1330 have hexagonal jacks and others have the standard round jack.

Thanks Andre, depending on what information I receive here, I may just do that.
I'm in the UK/Ireland. First time was the rainbox lines upon startup, got so bad it wouldn't even make it to Windows, called Dell, they sent out a replacement. ~8 months on, now out of warranty, battery won't charge, system doesn't recognise AC adaptor (adaptor tested, 100%) and as of last week, the rainbow lines have started to appear again.

    Here is what Dell said:
That's a good point, thanks for the tip. I have the hexagonal power connector, I will definitely check with the supplier before ordering.

    Thanks,
    Richard

    "rainbow lines" ?
    Sounds like artifacting.

I know you said it's out of warranty, but are you factoring in the extra year of gpu warranty?

If not, you should be aware that your laptop's motherboard is covered under a 'special' warranty, because the 8400m GS is flawed.

Your system warranty may have ended in september 08, but you have a warranty covering the gpu/motherboard till september 09.

Wow, I can't believe this. Why didn't the support rep make me aware of this? I can't believe he was actually going to let me go ahead and buy a new motherboard for €400, when I could have it replaced under the "Limited Warranty Enhancement".

    http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/...ment-to-all-affected-customers-worldwide.aspx

I have just sent off an e-mail to the Dell support rep I was speaking to threatening to cancel a recent order (XPS Studio 16 - €1.5k) that hasn't been shipped yet, if this situation isn't resolved. I also asked why I wasn't made aware of the warranty extension.

For those interested, I'll update the thread with the response.

If you get the run around drop me a line as I have dealings with UK /Ireland management..
Even so under the UK/Ireland Sale of Goods Act, Faulty goods (Manufacture faulty goods) is covered up to 6 years.

For up to six years after purchase (five years from discovery in Scotland) purchasers can demand damages (which a court would equate to the cost of a repair or replacement). check out the homepage or Google Sale of Goods Act Fact Sheet

    Good news!

Dell have agreed to replace my motherboard under the extended GPU warranty. The support rep didn't mention the warranty extension to me because the reason I first contacted them was to resolve an AC power issue and not a video card issue. The coloured lines and freezing screen appeared a week or two after this. I just presumed the two were linked, as both faults require motherboard replacement.

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the help/information. If some of you didn't question why I was replacing my motherboard, I'd probably have already bought a new one! :)

    Thanks again,
    Richard
