when i go to performance information and tools, the graphics display adapter is listed as Intel(R) HD Graphics Family. 1696 mb. Is by 525m even being used? When I right click desktop and screen resolution, it says display- Mobile PC Display, when i thought it should display my nvidia card.

AFAIK, display output is always handled by the IGP. The discrete graphics card never handles OS desktop compositing. This is a good thing because your idle temperatures and battery life would probably suck if the nVidia card was being constantly and unnecessarily used. right click on ur desktop, go to nvidia control panel.
then at the top , click on Desktop (between 3D settings and Edit)
and select "Display GPU Activity Icon in notification area"

then if you hover your mouse over the icon in the notification tray (where the clock is) then it will tell you which programs are using the graphics card.
