    Hello,

i just got my xps 15 last week but as we know they don't give you a windows 7 disc.

I've made my recovery discs as they suggested but if I want to do a format and clean install how can I get a windows 7 disc from dell, or is it possible?

It's been like that for years for all OEM.
You have to order it from dell, which cost extra i think 20 bucks, which is the recovery cd. I don't know if there is a slight difference from the one you make unlike HP is the same.

Anyways, you could download it from here.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

Direct link to x64 iso, if you don't feel like reading that post
    http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65805/X15-65805.iso

Delete the ei.cfg and burn or write a bootable device. Have fun. :)

Does the recovery CD contain the stupid bloatware that comes with the factory settings? If not, I ordered the Windows 7 recovery discs which I will use if this is the case.

Yes and No, if you ordered the recovery disc's from Dell you'll receive the OS on one disc and the drivers and bloatware on the second.

No, not if you don't have a key for it. By deleting the .cfg file you could use the same DVD to install all versions of Windows, provided you have the key, but the license key you enter will set the version for you.

One can 'upgrade' anytime to any version above by using OEM SLP keys that float around in other forums... but that's technically piracy

The cost of your replacement OS DISK is free and can be requested from dell VIA this link.

    Dell - Support

Also, They include a real OS disk if you make the request properly and will include the drivers and bloat-ware on another disk.

    Hope this helps,

    @vacaloca
You may need to edit your post, the mod's are not keen on that kind of info.
Even if it was sarcastic. :(

Well, I know the HP mods are strict when they get to it, don't know about Dell mods.

When you configure your system, you have the option to buy the OS reinstall disk for $15. I also call afterwards and make dell send me every single CD for every piece of software installed from the factory. It can be a pain, but it's worth it.

nothing wrong with downloading a windows 7 disc from a torrent or msdn site! And register it with the product key from the bottom of your notebook. That is perfectly legal as you own the rights to that software which you should if u have any hp or dell or other brand name computer :)

if you would like to get a windows 7 disc you cant. You can only get a recovery disc which is equivalent to the windows 7 disc in that it contains that plus the installed drivers and apps. This may be available for a fee....

Refer to the link on the first page. You can get the OS disc for free, as well as a disc each for drivers, PowerDVD, and Roxio Creator.

As falcon64 said, you can get the windows 7 disk. To clarify, it is a windows 7 install disk, nothing more. No dell crap on it.

I thought it was a mistake that they didn't give me the disk. I guess when I called to ask them, I was supposed to do that....they thought I couldn't install windows on my own LOL.

Btw, They overnight all the disks to you at no cost. Its a bit of trouble but I recommend anyone who reads this post to request all the disks.

Anyone know how I can get these replacement disks for the UK? I tried installing Ubuntu and mistakenly deleted the backup partition and I hadn't done the initial datasafe backup.

I've phoned tech support but they're pretty clueless for this topic.

I searched on the UK site and got this :

    http://support.euro.dell.com/suppor...t?c=uk&l=en&s=dhs&cs=&docid=124442&doclang=en

...but when you click on the "Request Backup Discs form" at the bottom it just gives a 500 error.

I've got a horrible feeling I won't be able to restore this partition again.

OK that's not going to work.

I think as other people have suggested in the thread you can either order one from Dell or perhaps get one off E-Bay?

I submitted a request, but they said they cannot send one for free, only if I pay $10.99 or so.... I have sent a reply saying, either ship it for free or just return me back the fee for Windows, I dont need a license.... Let me see what they reply - though I doubt they're gonna give it away for free....

If they dont, I'm planning to call them....

I called Dell when I got my L702X and that looks like the disk that was shipped to me. I think that there is an option during the reinstall of the OS to chose just the OS or the OS & Dell Bloatware.

    Thanks
