I have xn XPS x1730 with the 8700 m display card. I have been reading that Dell has been upgrading certain users. How can I know if I qualify for the upgrade to the 8800 GT?

You "qualify" from a hardware perspective. If you buy the card from Dell and do the upgrade yourself, you should be covered under warranty unless you damage something upon re-assembly of your laptop.

The card is impossible to find, though, as many of these cards have failed due to overheating and those who are covered straight out under Dell warranty often have had to have their entire systems replaced with Alienware.
