I'm considering buying a Studio XPS 16. What do you guys think of it appearance-wise? The back (lid) looks sweet, but looking at the front, the metal part with screws on the sides of the display looks like it could be a bit distracting.
-
I don't find the silver screwborders distracting. Actually I like them
-
Those silver screws are the only thing I don't like about the new design.
-
It's actually one good reason I bought the laptop. It was a gift from God. lol I was looking for a nice looking lappy with a chiclet keyboard. God, how I love chiclets and this was just god sent. I find the design to be by far the nicest for laptops if not one of the best. MBP are a good contendor, but its design just drew me in...
-
the design and build are amazing. easily the sexiest laptop i have ever seen. the screwboard adds a nice touch.
-
I think they make the laptop look nice and unique. If it was all black it would look like any other run of the mill laptop. -
Yup, I also think the SXSP is one of the best looking laptops currently. But unlike alot of other good looking laptops, it doesnt sacrifice power, which is why I bought it. I would prefer if the sides of the screen didnt have those aluminum things (and have it straight black), but it's not too big of a deal to me.
-
After adding the 9 cell battery, I like it even more.
Not only does it lift the rear for cooling, but it tilts the keyboard at a really nice angle towards you. I love the look, very high tech but not silly. And I think the hinge design is great. It's a solid quality package. -
I also like SXPS design but I wish Dell use brushed aluminium for the palm rest just like M1530.
brushed aluminium >>>> glossy plastic
I hope Dell will bring something awesome for 2010. -
My fav 3 notebook designs:
apple macbook pro
sony fw
dell studio xps
I didn't buy Apple because it is overpriced, gpu is mediocre at best, and particularly because only crippled drivers are provided to run windows as a primary os... things like the touchpad and power management only work as they should in osx. I've used osx and do not particularly like it. While Vista had its share of issues, Windows 7 is excellent. Good things about the MBP are backlit keyboard, WLED screen, and aluminum unibody chassis. The long battery life is only with osx. I also like the slick desktop integration with the LED Cinema Monitor over mini-Displayport even though it is essentially proprietary to Apple.
I didn't buy Sony because the hardware is somewhat dated, i.e. DDR2 memory, and there is no keyboard backlighting. GPU is basically same as the Dell but is clocked lower. Sony is also a quirky company and I woudl expect replacement or upgrade parts would be hard to get. I will say there were good deals on the AW and was tempted.
Dell really hit a home run with the Studio XPS. Only design complaint is that it is a fingerprint magnet, and I keep a micro fibre cloth in my bag for it. RGBLED screen and ATI 4670 GPU beat MBP. Keyboards are comparable, whether or like or dislike chiclets will determine your favorite. Getting replacement or upgrade parts from Dell is easy.
Although Sony beat the Dell in price when ordered new, getting a sweet deal on the Oulet took care of that! -
I really like the look of SXPS...the 1340 is going to prolly be my next lappy. Was going to order a few week ago..but had a situation come up
Now just waiting a bit to see if the Red will come out in the non Leather option...also!Which I'm fairly certain it prolly will, in questioning my Rep about it, he couldn't confirm nor deny!

I really like the leather. It gives you a nice hand hold that keeps it from slipping while carrying it. -
Any issues with "wrist prints" caused when typing? That's a concern I always have with these glossy laptops.
-
Yup, if your hands arent pure dry, then the gloss on the palmrest will get dirty. Even the keys will get dirty if your hands are sweaty/oily from moisturizer.

From the first time I saw it, I fell in love with it. When it was announced on the Dell site, I immediately knew that this was going to be my new machine. I looked at several other machines too, of which the Sony Vaio FW31ZJ was the strongest contender. The Sony's specs were a bit less and it has a strange keyboard (keys are far apart) which takes some getting used to, but mainly the price / quality ratio of the Sony was very (extremely) good!
Like I said, Sony's specs are a bit less (T9550, 800 Mhz memory, 4200 rpm harddrive, slower videocard), but it came at less than half the price I now paid for my SXPS16!
Still, this machine had me from the beginning... I absolutely fell in love with it, and I still am loving it... It's a performing beast (create a 2 hour bluray movie in Adobe Premiere in under 4 hours!!!) en it's looks are awesome!
The hinges are actually quite practical: You can use them to adjust the screen angle. This way you don't have to touch a shiny plastic part so you don't get fingerprints or smudges.
There's one serious achillesheel to this machine though: Don't expect to use it on your lap, because it will leave blisters on your legs! It is a serious performer in a tiny little package, so it does get very hot; especially if you make it work hard. Even with slower processors it does get hot, so don't let this hold you back in choosing an upgraded processor.
Have fun! -
How do you guys like the SXPS design?
