I saw the thread about how bad the 1080p screen on the XPS 16 is, but what about the 720p screen?
What are your thoughts?

Honestly I don't see how 1080p can be that good on such a small screen. I have 24" monitor and it's great. Having the same number of pixels on 16.4" is just too much.
-
in my honest opinion, the 720p is fine on the xps 1640. supposedly, one cant even make out the difference between 720p and 1080p on such small scales... meaning that to notice the difference one would need big screens such as 51" , etc. This is just from what ive read. Personally, im going to buy the xps in march and its def going to be the 720p. Plus, to me 200+ dollars for 1080p is just ridiculous in my opinion...
-hope this helps.

I dont know about the 720p but the 1080 just....blows me away. The quality is so good that it makes my friends' laptops inferiors! If you are qualified for EPP, I HIGHLY recommend you call and brag about the 1080 upgrade for 50 bucks. I did it, my friend did it, and you can do it too...trust me, you will not regret this decision.good luck

I agree. It seems like there is really no need for the 1080p to me. I don't watch movies hardly ever, and when I do, I think the 720p will be just fine.
-
You know 1080 is not just for movies. You also get a lot more space. However I know some older folks have trouble reading text on high res screens.
-
I have the 1080p and I'm loving it. The extra space is welcomed seeing that I multitask a lot and need as much space as possible for my working environment.
-
Is the 1080p any better for movies? I mean is there really that much difference between 720p and 1080p for HD movies?
-
i have WDtv and it plays all Ps and Is, now i dl movies in 1080p but they r usually around 9gb so i dl'ed a 720p today and on my 46inch samsung i hardly noticed a different but i didnt watch a high action movie i watched role models movie. i mean it looked crisp and was only 4.73gb so to be honest 720p is fine for non-action movies imo

paper_wastage Beat this 7x7x7 Cube
depends on your source (eg BluRay vs Downloaded HD videos which are usually inferior to BluRay)
and its a 16" screen... maybe u can see the difference, maybe u cant....
surely some buyers use the XPS 16 as a bluray player and output using hdmi -
Picture quality depends on more than resolution. Contrast, brightness, saturation ,ect. I think the high res screen is a higher quality panel overall so I would guess yes.

I don't understand how can that be a problem when you can adjust/increase the text size on most programs out there.
- Adjust Windows font DPI
- Zoom in on internet browsers, MS Office programs, etc. -
I'm still really confused as to which screen offers better quality of picture and HD video playback. krionX is correct, text size is not an issue.
Not talking screen space (I know 1080p is more), is there really any noticeable difference in HD video playback on the 720p or 1080p screen? -

I have to say no. When one goes out to buy a TV, the general consensus is that one benefits more with 1080p if the screen over 40'. 720p works fine with anything less than that. Now, your decision is over a laptop screen that is 16'. I have 720p on my m1530 and it's perfectly fine. I'm sure 1080p would look better, but for me it does not justify the price increase. -
From my experiance, the 720p WLED screen is shockingly bad.
the resolution i s too small, the colours are not very rich and are morepale, the blacks are not deep and more greyish and the WORST thing is when watching a movie or anything is in motion on the screen iw ill get horizontal lines going across that area.
the reason i gave me SXPS back is because of it. -
It's not the just the screen size, but how far you are from the screen. At the typical laptop viewing distances, the difference between 1080 and 720 is definetely noticable. -
Well someone said the 1080p screen had really bad blacks and red colors. It sounds like both screen options are crappy quality.
How good is the 720p XPS 16 screen?
