Trying to get a sense of how portable the 1640 feels, is it comfortable in your lap, etc =)

I don't really use the XPS 16 on my lap or any laptop on my lap when using it, for that matter...but the few rare times I put it on my lap, it feels okay but certainly not lightweight, but not distractingly heavy either. It might feel a bit heavy at times if you lift it up to carry some place, but depends on where you hold the laptop. If you grab it a certain way, it can feel comfortable, but grab it somewhere else, you'll be pulling the rest of the weight.

lol thats funny, I always thought it felt lighter than it looked :)

Also, its 6.4 lbs with a 6 cell. So its about the weight of a medium textbook.

I found it to be light and easy to carry. Very comfortable on your lap as long as you aren't gaming or doing anything else that is graphic intensive (then it gets rather warm). The size and design give it the perfect balance. I actually think it was more comfortable to use on my lap than my mini 10!

I have a 1705 and a 1720 that I would never use on my lap or carry around. They are bulky and the weight of the screen makes them feel like they are going to tip over.

It's very dependant upon where and how you pick it up. Here's why:

The notebook is roughly 14-15" length and ~9-10" width. If you try to pick it up lengthwise, it feels heavy. If you pick it up around the leather accent or from the front of the monitor, it feels surprisingly light.

When sitting on your lap, it feels reasonably light but it FEELS long. It's not a small laptop.

It's pretty reasonable in weight for a 16"....if you are worried about weight, step down to a Studio 15 (5.8 pounds). But everything significantly lighter is either way, way more expensive or alot less powerful.

It depends on what you're used to. If you have no problems with 15" laptops, it's not that big of a deal. If you're used to 13" systems then it will probably seem big and heavy. You can already see by the varied responses in this thread, how big it feels is all relative to what is big to you.

Feels pretty svelte compared to my old Inspiron 8600. So while it compares favorably to the 15.4" class I doubt it would be the same with the 13.3" which is understandable.

I used to use an Inspiron 9300 (17 inches, 9 lbs) and this thing feels, obviously, much more comfortable. Piece of cake to carry around, compared to my old machine.
