How long would a DELL OEM Battery stored in warehouse for five years last?

I'm extremely happy with my six year old Dell XPS 13 L322X laptop. Really fast and reliable.

So, I decided to replace the battery in my Dell XPS 13 L322X as it was six years old and only
holding a charge for less than two hours. So I ordered a new one OEM one from Newegg.

OEM Genuine Original Y9N00 Battery DELL XPS 13 47WH 13-L322X

My question is; How long would a DELL OEM Battery stored in warehouse for five years last? I'm hoping it hasn't aged just sitting and not being used? The Dell reviews say the battery should last 4-7 hours with medium use, but that was brand new at the time. If it is not going to give me more than four hours, I may just send it back before opening the package, or if someone answers quick enough, I'll cancel the order.

Don't worry, it isn't five years old, it's much more likely a fake ;(
Dell don't sell batteries via third parties, in fact they have a big problem providing them for just a year or two old laptops at their service.
Generally it is healthier ordering replacement batteries sold as compatible from a reputable battery brand if you can find such (folks that spend more time on selecting batteries than on copying the labels). Or even better buy laptops from brands that do supply reasonably priced replacement batteries after five years.

Well, Dell doesn't carry batteries for that laptop anymore even though it is high end one being XPS. I got one off eBay that said Genuine Dell battery but it wasn't because dell batteries have a chip in them that detects batteries. You get a warning: "Warning: The battery is not recommended battery. The system will unable to charge this battery. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup the utility.
So I got lucky, when I asked for a return, the seller not only instantly refunded my money and told me don't bother shipping it back as to save me shipping cost.

Now I've been reading that Newegg has Genuine OEM batteries for it, so I ordered one for $45.
    OEM Genuine Original Y9N00 Battery DELL XPS 13 47WH 12 13-L321X 13-L322X 489xn

But I've also read the the only Genuine OEM battery that Dell recommends is sold by
    https://www.parts-people.com
    Exact OEM Replacement
Originally shipped with laptop from Dell.
Found Using Your Dell Service Tag D5HM1Y1

and that one is expensive at $120 plus tax $130!

If I find this is the only battery that works for my XPS, then I'll just sell
this laptop and apply that $130 toward new laptop.

I do NOT like it when big name companies like Dell, Nikon force you to buy their brand batteries.
I didn't have this problem with my Samsung, Lenovo laptops I had. Aftermarket batteries worked just great, not problems.
So I might not buy from Dell next time if this is what they do.

They tend to sit circa 50% charge from new meaning they will sit on a shelf happily for several years.

Ah ha!!! I found the easy way to fix this battery warning at startup.
When you start the laptop, keep tapping F2 until the BIOS screen shows up.
    Then scroll left to Advanced.
Then scroll down to Adapter Warnings.
    Change enabled to Disabled.
    Then scroll to EXIT
Make sure "Exit Saving Changes" is selected, then hit "Enter" on keyboard, then "Yes".
    That's it!

Well, since my last post, I've bought three different batteries and installed them. The last two were "claimed" OEM batteries. I have yet to go past 2.5 hours with them. My six year old battery will do just short of two hours.

The Dell XPS 13 L322X ran for 4 hours and 52 minutes in a couple video playback battery drain test on reviews. So why can't mine do that... what gives???

Other than the low battery time, this laptop is fast and has been great. I'm not buying a new one for a couple more years.

Look up battery-life a few optimization guides. Mostly it is about getting rid of unnecessary background processes, and finding more power-efficient software.

I've heard this is a good place, but when I went to their site for my battery

    https://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=16788
    New Dell XPS XPS 13 (L322X) OEM Original XPS 13 (L321x) / XPS 12 (9Q23) 47Wh 6-cell Laptop Battery - Y9N00

This company is recommended on this dell site from I've seen for parts, but expensive!
    However, I got this message:
    Out Of Stock.

So anywhere else to get a real OEM battery for my XPS L322X? If not, how about China, is there a company over there that is reliable and sells real OEM parts?

Parts People seem to cycle through parts so you might just look every day to see if they get restocked. You might also send them a message asking when the battery might be back in stock.

    Hi Jack,

Unfortunately we do not have an ETA on when we might get the part back in stock. It really just a matter of when it becomes available to us again. I'm sorry I wish we had it for you. On the product page, you can add yourself to the auto-notify list to be emailed when the item returns to stock.

So now I repeat my question, where else can I look for a Genuine OEM battery for my XPS L322x?
Or am I forced to look to China for one? How do I get a true genuine one over there. China is famous
    for fakes.

I bought a third party battery for my dell 2 in 1 off amazon. It has better performance than the original battery. When new my original battery did not last as long as the new third party battery. I have since ordered a battery for my sons acer s3 and the same result. This company's batteries are great and inexpensive.

Update, just went back through my amazon purchases and the place I got the batteries from was ZTHY TECH seller on amazon. I recommend them for a battery. Just because it has dell stamped on the package, does not mean it's actually a dell battery. As mentioned before Dell does not sell via third party. But these third party batteries I am using are great.

Question, is there a proper way to break in a new battery to get better runtime out of it?
Like some batteries you run the battery all the way down and recharge if I recall.

Okay, I'll do the same... It came today, one day shipping. I'll try to make time to install it in a day or so, just moved into a new house in the country and my wife is crackin' the whip with honey- do stuff...

Question, since it's not a original dell OEM battery with a chip in it, did you get this warning? I did with the other two batteries, but found a way to turn that off:

Dell batteries have a chip in them that detects batteries. You get a warning: "Warning: The battery is not recommended battery. The system will unable to charge this battery. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup the utility.

Even with Dell XPS? I had bought two supposedly new OEM batteries off eBay and that message showed up.
The vender sent me another one when I complained, told me to keep the other one.
I had to do this to fix it:
When you start the laptop, keep tapping F2 until the BIOS screen shows up.
    Then scroll left to Advanced.
Then scroll down to Adapter Warnings.
    Change enabled to Disabled.
    Then scroll to EXIT
Make sure "Exit Saving Changes" is selected, then hit "Enter" on keyboard, then "Yes".

That solved the problem... but I still only got 2-3 hours out of each charge. Hope that changes this time.

I'd be happy if I could get at least 3-4 hours. I only run Win 10 and a few programs on my xps ssd and everything else is on my 4TB Passport. So it's pretty clean. I check what's running via Task Manager and shut down everything but what I need.

The xps is pretty darn fast. I expect a new battery even if it has been sitting a few years at 50% to last longer than my five year old battery, (at the time I bought the other two) to last longer than 2 hours that I got with my old original battery.

If its an external HDD, you are burning 2-5Watts just having that HDD connected to the laptop and idling, more if you are reading/writing to it!

I figured as much. So what I do (if I'm unplugged) , if I'm just doing online stuff, the Passport is unplugged. Same if I'm doing Photoshop. I'll plug the Passport in if I need to save or retrieve photos off it.

Most of the time, I'm plugged in so my Passport is plugged in as well. I rarely take the Passport with me when I take the XPS with me, so I have 128Gb media sticks that I'll plug in if I need to save or retrieve something.

    Okay....
I installed the new battery for my Dell XPS L322x and got this message in Window 10 when I checked for the the battery in status in lower right corner: No battery detected. Also won't start with AC Adapter disconnected.
Then after the third reboot, I got this message at startup with black screen:

"Warning: The battery is not recommended battery. The system will unable to charge this battery. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run setup the utility.
So I go into BIOS/Advance/Battery Health - Non Dell Battery.

Then it boots into Windows 10, and when I check the Status bar in lower Right corner, it says battery 100% charged. I get a flashing white light and orange light. Never got that before. Orange only means its charging, white light only means full charge. Never had both lights alternating blinking at same time before.

Laptop still won't startup unplugged. I put in my old battery and everything works fine, so it's not the laptop?

    Solutions? or return? IMG_5878-web.jpg IMG_5879-web.jpg IMG_5881-web.jpg

Now I have a new problem. I decided to take the new battery out to send back unless I heard how to fix it... when I went to take the back carbon fiber base cover off, apparently I had tighten the T5 star screw head ( red arrow) too tight and stripped it trying to get it out. Now I've got to figure out how to get that tiny base screw out. If I can't, I'm stuck with that battery in there that don't work and can't send it back either. I've probably taken the base cover off too many times now, about nine times with the other two batteries I got and now this one.

You can often place a rubber band between the driver and the screw head and it will help you. Just be sure to apply enough downward force as you turn to prevent it from stripping more.

    UPDATE:
The tip with using a rubber band worked to get the stripped screw out. Got lucky too as the computer shop I visit had the proper screws too, so I bought five of them.

As for the battery, I thought I'd try one more time, unplugged battery cable and plugged it back in, made sure it was tight. Put base back on, (not screwed in yet and Lo and Behold it works fine now with AC adaptor unplugged. Says 58% charged, Both lights not blinking at the same time.... just a steady orange light showing it is charging when the AC adaptor is plugged in.
Go figure. Unless someone says otherwise here, near as I can figure, I had to reboot the laptop three times before the battery even showed up and now I had to unplugged the battery three times before it worked properly.

Maybe there is truth to the famous saying "Third time is the charm"

Now to fully charge it and test turning it off and on a few times without the Charger and see how it goes.

I’m wondering if one of the connections were just not “right”. When you unplugged and put it back in everything fired up. Glad it’s working. What’s the computer working like?

Well, so far good, normal. I'll test the battery seeing how long it last when I go to Oregon to visit my 93 year old Mom. When I check the battery level in status unplugged it says I have a tad over 4 hours on the battery, but that isn't always accurate. I'll be happy if I can come close to 4 hours...

It's relatively accurate with my machines. So I would say you will get the recommended time. I do lower my screen brightness on battery just to save a bit more. about 60-75 percent brightness on battery. That being said, I run about 85-90 on power. I find the screen really bright on my notebook. Good Luck.

I have mine on "Dell Extended Extended Battery Life" so screen is at 50% which is acceptable.

Cool. Does it increase when plugged in?

When I shut it off at 5 am at exactly 3 hours I had 35% and 1 hour 46 min left
I'm 15 minutes into it right now and it reads 32% 1 hour 39 min left
    UPDATE:
It shutdown at 4 hours 34 minutes.

How does that compare when it was brand new?

Well, I bought it off eBay two years ago... the seller claimed that he bought it and decided after a weeks use, that the screen was too small and ordered a Dell 15" screen and put the XPS away in a closet and forgot about it. (Why he didn't return it, I don't know) He said it was still absolutely like new and had a 100% rating on eBay so I took chance on it and paid $325 for it which is pretty good as it cost as configured in 2013: $1,499. It came in the Dell original box which looked new and I looked over the laptop with a magnifying glass (and yes I did) there were no sign of wear, scratches, smudges anywhere, even on the carbon fiber base. Worked flawlessly and my only complaint was the battery runtime which was about 2.5 hours at that time. The laptop was already four years old when I bought it. So after a year, the battery was lasting less than two hours so I bought the first two batteries off eBay and they gave me close to 2.5 hours???

Now getting 4+ hours of battery runtime is pretty good as in a couple reviews I've read, it said this:
Dell advertises a runtime of “up to 8 hours, 53 minutes”, but it is clear that the notebook can only reach such numbers by literally sitting idle at minimum brightness. Also i t is well known that an IPS display will generally draw more power than a TN panel of similar size and resolution. Depending on user preferences and the load activity of the notebook, a 4 to 5 hour window of constant usage is a more realistic expectation.

So all said, I'm real happy with this XPS laptop. Should last me another year or two, then I'll buy another XPS.

Even came with a purple case like are on phones. I put the UW Husky logo on it.

New question... I've read where if you leave the charger hooked up while laptop is turned off, that it's not good for the battery to continuously charging it when it's off?

So should I unplug the laptop from AC when laptop is shut down?

    Or does it matter?

What I've been doing is when the laptop is shut down, unplugging the charger.
When I'm using the laptop, plugging it back into the charger?

I want to get long life out of this new battery.

I never do. I leave my laptop in sleep mode, from what I understand is that dell's power management keeps your battery in top shape while sleeping. Im not sure on when it's off.

I notice that if the laptop is sleeping and it's unplugged, it slowly drains the battery.

What about Battery calibration, how is that done and does it help?
